Well, I’ve got to admit, we’re in emotional territory, again, aren’t we?
I was watching the BBC’s rather good Breakfast News service, when — in the wake of the Debbie Purdy Right to Die ruling, from the House of Lords — they had a live interview with Terry Pratchett; on the same subject.
As you may realise, it’s something he’s supported for some time. Although, speaking personally, it’s something I know I, personally, have very mixed feelings about. My grandmother died from complications of Alzheimer’s; while I have personal experience of the condition he’s suffering, I’m also not sure what sort of option I’d want to go for, in his shoes.
I do know, though, that the interview he did this morning – writer and former journalist that Sir Terry is – was both passionately, and eloquently, in favour of the idea. And to the extent of writing, in the recent Sunday Telegraph, a reassuring — to me — article, explaining the idea of having a tribunal to deal with each patients case.
You know, now I look at that statement, it’s not the idea of the tribunal that seems so reassuring.
It’s simply the fact that Sir Terry is still functioning, and able to speak, passionately, angrily, and eloquently on the subject.
That’s the reassuring part, and certainly made me feel a bit easier …

ReplyDeleteGreat post on a long debated subject...I'm not sure where I stand...I was a wee one when Dr. Death aka Jack Kevorkian was making headlines on the same subject..
This subject will be debated for centuries I'm sure...
