The Late Tony Nicklinson |
Oh …
Now that’s sad …
You’re probably aware that I’ve been keeping an eye on various people’s campaigns on the right to die, over the years: or Assisted Death, as Terry Pratchett has called it.
I have to admit, it’s something I still feel ambiguous about: but I’d been following Mr Nicklinson’s efforts to arrange a High Court ruling to have a doctor help him to die.
One that, only a short while ago, failed.
Something I felt vaguely saddened about: but felt could, with a touch more work, could be remedied.
Saying that … ?
Saying that, I was renewing a book, today, at Brentwood Library. And, using their computers to check on my Twitter account, I saw this tweet from Channel Four’s news service …
Locked-in sufferer Tony Nicklinson, who last week lost his legal challenge for the right to end his life with a doctor's help, has died
— Channel 4 News (@Channel4News) August 22, 2012
That grabbed my attention, obviously.
And saddened me, as well.
Tony Nicklinson, much like Winnie Johnson a few days ago, died without being able to finish his fight.
And that’s as much of a tragedy as anything else.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
