The Daily Teaser — 30-11-2014: St. Andrew’s Day

Ohhhhh, lordy, but I’m up, already …

Yes: nice and (comparatively) early.

Mostly because I’ve got an early start, today, at work: I’m doing a ten ’til four shift.

Not that I’m complaining.   It’s nice to be working, again, after all this time.

But, BOY, am I looking forward to going back to bed … !

~≈†≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 30th November is, obviously, Saint Andrew’s Day.   It’s a public holiday in Scotland.   What’s the term for a public holiday, in Scotland and the rest of the UK?
Q2) When are any of the other public holidays: in Scotland?
Q3) The town of Saint Andrews is which Scottish county: Clackmannanshire, Fife or North Ayrshire?
Q4) The town is ALSO home to Golf’s major governing body: what’s it called?
Q5) The Flag of Scotland is a white Saint Andrew’s cross on a blue background.   What name’s given to the flag?
Q6) That flag is also the flag of the largest of the Canary Islands.   Which Island are we talking about?
Q7) Celebrating Saint Andrew’s Day — in Scotland — dates from the rule of whom: Duncan 1st, MacBeth or Malcolm 3rd?
Q8) A very old superstition, in parts of Scotland and northern England, sees people putting a Saint Andrew’s cross above the fireplace.   This stops what from coming down the chimney: witches, wizards or goblins?
Q9) Saint Andrew’s Day is an excuse to play which baggy, Scottish musical instrument?
Q10) Finally … what’s the capital of Scotland?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 29th November saw the birth of author, C. S. Lewis: in which year of the 1890s?
A1) 1898.
Q2) What did the C stand for?
A2) Clive.   (With the S standing for ‘Staples.’)
Q3) His series of children’s novel set in a mythical country were collectively called The Chronicles of … where?
A3) Narnia.
Q4) The first (published) book in the series was ‘The Lion, The Witch and the … ’ what?
A4) The Lion, The Witch and theWardrobe.
Q5) What’s the title of the first book of the Chronicles: if you read them in chronological order.   (In the chronological order of the Chronicles’ own fictional world, I should add.)
Q6) Either way you look at it, what’s the LAST book in the series?
Q7) Lewis’ Space trilogy consisted of Out Of The Silent Planet and Perelandra.   What’s the name of the last book in the trilogy?
Q8) Lewis also wrote The Screwtape Letters: advice on how to tempt people, from a senior what?
A8) Demon: called Screwtape.
Q9) Lewis was part pf an informal group of academics who called themselves The Inklings.   One other famous Inkling was the author of The Hobbit: who was he?
Q10) Finally … Lewis’ American wife, Joy, died of cancer in 1960.   What was the name of the 1993 film about their marriage?
I’ll leave you with this …

And this observation …
“The people who live in Scotland are best placed to make the decisions that affect Scotland. We want a Scotland that’s greener, that’s fairer and more prosperous.”
Former SNP leader, Alex Salmond, speaking of this year’s Scottish referendum.
Enjoy your day …

*        Always the way, Debbi, the fun stuff gets in the way of the job … !   (And, yeah, I kind of grew up on Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit.   Ever read The Silmarillion?   It’s good … but you DO have to make time for it … !)

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
