Oh, now, wait …
Wait, wait wait … !
I know there’s times when I get accused of throwing around the word, ‘impressive,’ quite a bit.
Which has a certain element of truth to it, actually: now I come to think of it.
But … ?
Well, frankly, I’ve just watched the last two episodes of the first season of Penny Dreadful.
And … ?
Well, this is just one man’s opinion.
But I’ve seen a TV series whose first sea on is not impressive.
No.
It’s bloody gorgeous.

As you know, I’ve recently got hold of the box set version of Sky/Showtime co-production, Penny Dreadful: and been binge-watching it, over the past few days.
Tonight … ?
I got to see episodes 7, Possession and episode 8, Grand Guignol.
Tonight? Tonight, I kicked off with Episode 7 — Possession — which sees the immediate results of Vanessa’s encounter with Dorian.
She’s left going into a fugue state: and possessed by an evil spirit.
Her friends — Sir Malcolm, Ethan, Victor and Sembene — helping to restrain her and administer sedatives, as needed.
The part of the job goes to Ethan, Victor and Sembene: as they try and help Vanessa, whilst trying to persuade Sir Malcolm that a priest will be needed.
To administer the Last Rites, if nothing else.
It’s only once Father Matthews acts, that things … explode …

Episode 8 follows directly on from the Rites, and the informal Exorcism administered by Ethan.
After Vanessa’s announced that she knows Mina — Sir Malcolm’s daughter — is at the Grand Guignol, the team go a’hunting.
Or, at least, Vanessa, Sir Malcolm and Sembene, do.
Victor … ?
Is helping Ethan, by trying to make sure Brona (Billie Piper) is well.
And, with Ethan distracted, Victor gets a pillow … and smothers her.
After all, Caliban … has made certain demands on the Doctor: wanting company, as he does.
Show and season closing on a question: one that will only be answered — I think — in season 2.
Personally?
I THINK I’m going to be waiting for the DVD release with a certain amount of impatience.

Because … ?
Well, because I’ve found myself getting rather hooked on Penny Dreadful. Certainly to this first series.
This first series has an especially fine cast. Eva Green and Rory Kinnear are outstanding: but ALSO outstanding members of an especially strong ensemble.
AND some exceptional writing from show-runner, John Logan.
Personally, I think …
Well, lots of things, frankly.
Chief amongst them has been the repeated thing I’ve been wondering for the past few days.
Why aren’t the UK’s terrestrial stations making genre TV this strong?
That’s one thing.
The other … ?
Game of Thrones, the world’s most watched — and most pirated — TV show?
Has competition.
And has competition that is a far better series.
