The Daily Teaser — 2-9-2015

Hmmm …

You can tell I like a book at bedtime, can’t you?

Although without an accompanying cocoa.

I’d stain my sheets.

At ANY rate, I like a book, at bedtime.   With the current title … ?   Being Bruce Sterling and William Gibson’s The Difference Engine.

Which I have to admit, I’m struggling with.

Oh, that’s no reflection on Sterling and Gibson’s writing, I should add.

It’s just that — re-reading it for the second time, as I am — I’m finding it tougher going than I expected.

I may — may, I should add — have to put it on hold.

On the other hand?   I hate doing that: I know I’ll never get it finished, that way … !

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: and scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 2nd September, 1192, saw Richard 1st cosign the Treaty of Jaffa: hastening the end of the Third Crusade.   Which Islamic ruler co-signed the Treaty?
Q2) 2nd September, 1901, saw the Vice President of the USA famously say “Speak softly, and carry a big stick.”   Who WAS that Vice President?
Q3) 2nd September, 1945, saw which country declare its independence?
Q4) Jean Paul Akayesu was found guilty of nine counts of genocide: on 2nd September, 1998.   He’d been the mayor of a small town, and involved in the killings in which African country?
Q5) Finally … 2nd September is the feast day of Saint Agricola of Avignon.   He’s traditionally invoked, if you have which disease:  AIDS, the Black Death or Bubonic Plague?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) On 1st September, 1960, the government of the UK announced betting shops would be legal: as from May of which year?
A1) 1961.   (One of the few years to be rotationally symmetrical …)
Q2) 1st September, 1604, saw Guru Granth Sahib installed at the Harmandir Sahib.   The guru is the holy scriptures: of which religion?
A2) Sikhism.
Q3) 1st September, 1532, saw Lady Anne Boleyn was named as Marquess of Pembroke: by her fiancé.   Who WAS her fiancé?
A3) Henry 8th.
Q4) 1st September, 1939, saw Action T4 signed into law, by Adolf Hitler.   This allowed Germany’s Nazi regime to kill whom: Jews, Gypsies or the disabled?
A4) The disabled: as well as the mentally ill.
Q5) Finally … 1st September, 1952, saw the first publication of the last book by Ernest Hemingway: at least, the last to be published during his lifetime.   Which of his novels was it?
A5) The Old Man and the Sea.   (I’ve never actually read it: I should remedy that, at some point … )
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“A football team is like a piano. You need eight men to carry it and three who can play the damn thing.”
Bill Shankly, former Liverpool manager, 2 September 1913 – 29 September 1981.
And this tune …

Enjoy your day … !

*        I try my damnedest to find good ones, Debbi! :D   When I research each day’s Teaser, I’ll try and find quotes from a person born that day.   Some folk … ?   Really don’t have a Wikiquote page: it’s always surprises me, who does or doesn’t.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
