The Daily Teaser — 23-9-2015

Right, it’s now a Wednesday.

Which means, of course, that I’m back at work.   I’m actually looking forward to it.

In part … ?   Because we have an official up selling contest: that runs for six weeks.   Having won the first one, but missed out on the second, I’d like to see what this weeks results are.

It’s not that I’m competitive.

Good lord, no!

I’d just like to know I’m doing better at it than everyone else … !

Q2) Two Middle Eastern countries started a war on 22nd September, 1980: when one of them bombed the other.   Name either country.

A2) Iraq and Iran.   (If I’ve understood my history correctly, modern suicide bombings date back to this conflict.   Ayatollah Khomeini came up with the theological justification for them, after   Mohammed Hossein Famideh, threw himself, and a grenade, under a Iraqi tank.)

Q3) UK broadcaster, ITV, first aired: on 22nd September, 1955.   To combat this, the BBC aired a major episode of which of their soaps: Eastenders, The Archers or Mrs Dale’s Diary?

*        Yeah, I got that Spectrum in, what, the early 1980s?   About 1982, if I recall correctly, Olga: pre-internet, so to speak.   You’re right about loading applications on that, they took a while.   There’s YouTube videos about it!   (Now I think of it, I don’t think the family’s first PC‡ wasn’t TOO bad: although it didn’t have a sound card.   But connecting to the ’Net was interesting: pre-broadband, you couldn’t stay connected to the ’Net, when someone wanted to make a phone call!   A lot of family conversations at the time consisted of “GET OFF THE PHONE, I WANT TO CALL WHO-EVER!!”)

†        Oh, lordy, yes!   Davros and Missy … ?   I should say so!   Is it me, Debbi^, or were they getting the best lines?   I have to admit, I love Julian Bleach’s performance as Davros: fascinating to see what he’s done with it.   (Actually, Bleach crops up in series two of Torchwood: he’s in an episode called From Out Of the Rain.)

‡        Just don’t get me started on mice, Olga: the PC mouse is the reason I feel in love with a Mac … 

^        Which reminds me, Debbi, I’m going to have to record the repeat on my new set-top box: the one that let’s me watch and record high-definition channels.   I’ve still not totally worked how it’s recording stuff!
