The Daily Teaser — 13-10-2015

Hmmm …

I don’t know if you knew it, but I’ve at least one neighbour who uses cannabis.

Not something I object too: in theory.

What I do object to is the fact whoever’s using it, is making my flat smell as a result.

I’ve been reporting this: as I object to that.

I did, last night, in fact, phoning the 101 non-emergency police line.

I ALSO got told something else: that phoning the local neighbourhood policing team could be useful.

So I phoned them, too.

Going by the recorded message I got?   I couldn’t leave a message: as their answer phone service was having problems.

But I could, as an alternative … ?   Phone 101 …

Oy veh …

~≈Á≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?   Time’s a wasting …

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* leaving her answers: scoring nine out of ten in process.   The day ALSO saw Olga† leaving us a comment: gently telling us, as a native Spanish speaker, she had an unfair advantage.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How ToLicense and video …

Q1) 13th October is the feast day of Saint Edward the Confessor, the last Anglo-Saxon King of where: England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales?
Q2) More to the point, Saint Edward is considered the last King of which royal house?
Q3) 13th October, 1307, saw the Knights Templar dissolved: by King Phillip 4th of where?
Q4) 13th October, 1773, saw astronomer, Charles Messier, discover the galaxy now called M51a.   It’s also known as what: the Eddy Galaxy, the Whirlpool Galaxy or the Mælstrom Galaxy?
Q5) A conference chose the meridian that would serve as the basis for Universal Time: on 13th October, 1884.   The meridian, famously, passes through which bit of London: Foots Cray, Greenwich or Hackney?
Q6) Finally … Fiji joined the United Nations: on 13th October, 1970.   The country is in which ocean: the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 12th October is UN Spanish Language Day.   Modern Spanish has its roots in which Spanish region: Catalonia, Castile or Aragon?
A1) Castile.   (The term, these days, generally includes the regions of Castile and León, Madrid and Castile La Mancha.)
Q2) Spanish is one of six official languages of which body: the UN, FIFA or FIDÉ?
A2) The United Nations, or UN.
Q3) Spanish is the majority language in 21 countries.   Name one of those countries … other than Spain.
A3) Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Cuba, Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Paraguay, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Puerto Rica, Pananma, Uruguay and Equatorial Guinea.
Q4) Spanish is descended from a spoken variety of what: Chinese, Latin or Sanskrit?
A4) Latin.
Q5) Canarian Spanish is the version of the language spoken on which group of islands?
A5) The Canary Islands.
Q6) Spanish, itself, is an official language in Spain.   It shares that status with four other spoken languages.   Name one of them.
A6) Aranese, Basque, Catalan and Galician.
Q7) In written Spanish, a sentence that’s a question has an inverted what, at the beginning?
A7) A inverted question mark.   (Effectively, Q7 would be written like this: ‘¿In written Spanish, a sentence that’s a question has an inverted what, at the beginning?’   In Spanish, obviously …)
Q8) Spanish uses 6 letters as vowels: rather than the five — a, e, i, o and u — used in English.   What’s the ‘extra’ vowel?
A8) Y.
Q9) According to Wikipedia, the Spanish version of the Latin alphabet has one extra letter.   What IS that letter?
A9) An accented version of N: Ñ, in other words.
Q10) Finally … What’s the Spanish word for the Spanish language?
A10) Español’.
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“The show is basically a religious show.   It’s about the search for God.   You know, ‘The truth is out there.’   That’s what it’s about.”
X-Files creator, Chris Carter, born 13th October, 1957.
And this tune …

Enjoy your day.

*        You know, I’m going to HAVE to think about heading for another convention, Debbi: it REALLY has been a while since I’ve been to one.

†        I’ve got to admit to not being sure, there, Olga: I DO know Trevor had trouble, sometimes, when Google ate his answers.   I’m ALSO very aware Michelle had problems, recently.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
