The Daily Teaser — 17-5-2016

Right …

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll realise I’m having issues.

With my stomach, so you know.

Which is why, yesterday, I had a quick series of blood tests: checking out what’s happening with my glucose levels, and liver.

There ’ll be an ultrasound, at some point: to check on my kidneys.

Hopefully, that’ll me know what on Earth’s happening.

~≈Ç≈~

Which reminds me …

I’m off to work, today: an hour earlier than usual, after being contacted by the boss, yesterday.

Quite what’s happening, I don’t know.   I know we’ve a couple of new people who’ve recently started,  and I’m wondering if one has decided the job’s not for them.

I can’t say I blame them …

But it seems a shame …

~≈Ç≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring ten out of ten.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) At least nine people were killed in a shoot-out, in Waco, Texas: on 17th May, 2015.   Between rival gangs of what?
Q2) 17th May saw the Government announce the RAF had bombed Germany’s Ruhr Valley region: with a revolutionary bouncing bomb.   The raids were known as the what raids?
Q3) 17th May, 2004, saw the first legal, same sex marriages take place in the USA.   The wedding took place in which state of the USA?
Q4) Which birthday boy is (theoretically) older: screenwriter, Dennis Potter, or actor, Dennis Hopper?
Q5) Finally … 178th May, 1994, saw the very first multi-party elections, held, where: Madagascar, Malawi or Mauritius?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 16th May, saw a lecture delivered by Nikola Tesla.   In which year?
A1) 1888.
Q2) The lecture was about transmitting electrical power, with what: direct current or alternating current?
A2) Alternating current.
Q3) Tesla backed one form of electrical distribution.   Which famed American inventor backed the other: Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Alva Edison or Samuel Morse?
Q4) Tesla, himself, was born in what’s now which country: Serbia, Croatia or Macedonia?
A4) Croatia: although, he, himself, was Serbian.
Q5) Most forms of alternating current have a frequency of 50 — or 60 — what?
A5) Herz: usually written as 50Hz: or 60Hz, depending.
Q6) Which ticking item will depend — very heavily — on those frequencies?
A6) Electrically powered Clocks.
Q7) The difference in electrical potential between two points — the force that makes electricity move through a wire, in other words — is called what: voltage, wattage or amperage?
A7) Voltage.   (I’m not dim: but there’s times I’m grateful for the Simple English edition of Wikipedia.)
Q8) What, exactly, is the standard SI unit of electrical power?
A8) Exactly: the Watt.
Q9) The mains electricity features a safety system.  Called what: Marsing, Venusing or Earthing?
A9) Earthing.
Q10) Finally … if something can block or slow the flow of electricity, that’s known as what?
I’ll leave you with this thought …
“I am really a very shy person … If I appear, it is because of the music, not because I want to be seen. I’m not a recluse. I like to go out, but I don’t like the glitziness that goes with it.”
Enya‡, born 17th May, 1961
And this tune …

Enjoy your day …

*        Oh, they’re crossed, Olga.   Along with my fingers, toes, eyes, legs … !   At any rate, it’s the old thing that AA tells us: take it one day at a time …

†        Well, I’ve always said you’re sparky, Debbi!   Actually, sparks is an old slang phrase for an electrician …

‡        The anglicised version of Enya’s full name is Enya Patricia Brennan.   The Irish^ version, which she also uses, is Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin.   There’s times I’m glad I’m monolingual.   But also times I’d like to work out how people’s names are pronounced in their original language … !

^        About The only word I DUE know in Irish … ?   Is ‘Ciotog,’ Irish for left handed.   You could possibly guess I known that one …

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
