Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 13-8-2016: International Left-handers Day

It has to be said, the holiday is … sort of over.

As today, I go back to work.

For a nine hour shift!

The first thing that springs to mind?

Well, frankly, it’s the word ‘Yoicks.’

After all, I’m looking at a nine hour shift, here.

The other things that crop up?

First off?

Well, I’m hoping my stomach behaves itself.

Secondly?

Well, it’s International Left Handers Day, today.

I’m a south-paw.   Wouldn’t I have just loved to have the day off!

~≈Ê≈~

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: scoring six out of six in the process.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 13th August is International Left handers Day.   Ciotach is ‘left handed.’   In which European language?
Q2) Tradition says that one specific food item should — if spilt — be thrown over the left shoulder: so it can hit whatever devil is lurking there.   What food item?
Q3) The Zuni people considered the left hand — and left handed — to be lucky.   The Zuni are native to where?
Q4) The sheep were on the right hand, and went to heaven.   The goats were on the left, and went to hell.   In a parable in which book of the New Testament?
Q5) Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova and Goran Ivanišević, are all left-handed what?
Q6) Manny Pacquiao writes right-handedly.   But is a southpaw sportsman.   What sport IS that?
Q7) Bongo is a term for ‘lefthanded:’ used by whom?
Q8) Lloque Yupanqui was left handed: and the third ruler of which South American people?
Q9) The term, ‘Left Hand Path,’ is said to be associated with what: gardening, black magic or building?
Q10) Finally … Wilko Johnson plays guitar right-handedly: despite being left handed.   Which pub rock band was he a founder member of?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 12th August is usually called the ‘Glorious 12th:’ and marks the traditional start of the hunting season.   Which bird is being hunted?
A1) The Red Grouse.
Q2) Isaac Singer was granted a patent for his sewing machine: on 12th August of which year?
A2) 1851.
Q3) The UN adopted Security Council Resolution 29: on 12th August, 1947.   Two countries were recommended for membership, as a result.   Name one of them.
Q4) A communications satellite, Echo 1A, was successfully launched on 12th August, 1960.   By whom?
A4) NASA.
Q5) The last surviving quagga died in captivity: on 12th August, 1883.   Studies have shown the Quagga is a type of what: aardvark, mole-rat or zebra?
A5) Zebra.
I’ll leave you with this quotation …
“My brother Allie had this left-handed fielder’s mitt. He was left-handed. The thing that was descriptive about it, though, was that he had poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink.”
From JD Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye.
And this tune from possibly the world’s best known left-handed guitarist …

As a final thought?

If you’re right handed, try do something left-handed, today.

Frustrating, isn’t it … ?

*        Forbidden Planet’s a favourite of mine, Debbi: and it’s aged remarkably well!   And I think Leslie Nielsen wasn’t the only actor to do both straight and comedic roles …

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
