Sorry to hear about your job, although I have the feeling it's been a long-time coming.
I don't live off my writing by any stretch of the imagination (I hardly sell any books. I suspect Debbie does better than I do). Translations bring some money in but if you work for yourself it means having to find clients and being your own business manager, marketing person, etc. (Most authors can't afford to pay for a translation or aren't sure it will be worth their money, so I don't get many of those). At the moment I'm doing translations and editing of website content for a marketing firm but not big money (and bizarre deadlines. And only a temporary contract).
Each individual person's circumstances are different, and a quiz book would have more potential and identifiable market (and you could try to get a traditional publisher interested. You have a presence on-line already and that should help. Check the Writer's Yearbook and make enquiries before writing the book as if they are interested they might guide you into what they need). Best of luck, and don't let my lack of success put you off. I just don't enjoy trying to convince people to write my books and I'm terrible at marketing my own stuff, and you need to be good at that (or have circumstances align for you).
That's a great idea. You could put it up on Amazon, etc. AND sell it from your blog! :)

You should get a job offer from someone else before quitting. I have found it's always easier getting a job, when you already have one.
