The Neon Demon — Wha … ?

29th December, 2016

You know … I like an occasional movie.

I really do.

That’s when I get the chance to see one.

Working nights, though?

Doesn’t give me that many free evenings.

I had one, tonight.

And really fancied something that’s been on my iTunes wish list a while.

The 2016, Nicholas Winding Refn piece that is The Neon Demon.

And … ?

It’s a bit …

Different …

~≈Â≈~

Set in Los Angeles, The Neon Demon follows the story of Jessie — Elle Fanning — a sixteen year old aspiring model who moves to the big city.

And who almost immediately falls into the wrong crowd.

Meeting a coterie of looks obsessed models, a make-up artist called Ruby — Jena Malone — and a rather seedy landlord: played by Keanu Reeves.

It’s only when she finds a cougar in her room … ?   That things really go down hill.

Which is possibly a short write up, I know: but it IS getting late.

At any rate, I think I can safely say The Neon Demon is …

Well, the word I kept thinking of whilst watching, is odd.

I’ve seen two over films of Refn’s films — Bronson and Valhalla Rising — and enjoy both.

But The Neon Demon, much like Valhalla Rising in particular, is … odd.

They’re both films that are ones that aren’t going to be to everyone’s taste: but ARE watchable

And, in the case of The Neon Demon?

Atmospherically strange, too.

Personally?

I’d suggest seeing The Neon Demon, before judging it.

It’s worth watching, I think: just to see if you do like it.

  1. Interesting challenge. I've seen Elle Fanning on a couple of films and thought she was impressive considering her age. Sometimes it's good to catch up on something a bit different.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
