American Horror Story — Series 3: Coven — Episodes 4, 5 & 6: Fearful Pranks Ensue, Burn, Witch, Burn & The Axman Cometh.

16th September, 2017.

Hmmm …

Right at the moment?   I can safely say my media streaming box — a fourth generation AppleTV, if you’re asking — is getting some overtime done.

Right at the moment, I’m listening to the latest OMD album, The Punishment of Luxury.

I don’t know if I’m completely convinced,  just yet.   I still think English Electric was the better overall album: standing along side Dazzle Ships and Architecture and Morality as some of their better work.

Still … ?   Robot Man and Precision and Decay are good.

If you can find them, give them a listen!

There is, of course, a reason why I mention the AppleTV.

It’s been on over time this weekend: as I’ve had some time to call my own.

Yes.   You’re right.

I caught a movie, last night: Alien Covenant, if you’re interested.   Possibly not horror, but certainly science fiction.

No, horror was what I was after, tonight.   Good ol’ American horror.

Good ol’ American Horror Story, in fact.

More episodes of series three, if you must know.

Coven …

Set on Halloween night, Episode 4Fearful Pranks Ensue — sees the coven visited by the Council of Witches: after Madison (Emma Roberts) goes missing in a previous episode.

The episode also show us Cordelia’s (Sarah Paulson) husband, Hank (Josh Hamilton): the business trip he’s told her he’s on?   Isn’t what it seems.

On top of this … ?   Flashbacks show us SOME of Marie’s (Angela Bassett) motivations, over the years.

That same night is the setting for Episode 5Burn, Witch, Burn!: the academy on the receiving end of an attack of zombies, sent by Marie.

During this?   LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) opens the door to some: recognising three of the zombies as the mortal remains of the daughters she’d mistreated.

And Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) confronts Fiona (Jessica Lange).

Queenie want’s to know if she’s framed an innocent woman …

Episode 6The Axeman Cometh — opens with a flashback to the Academy.   Back in 1919, the then class of witches — led by Mille (Grace Gummer*) — decided to entrap  a local serial killer called the Axeman (Danny Huston).

The clues the Class of 1919 that tell their story?   Are hidden in a cupboard.

Only to be found, many years later, by Zoe (Taissa Farmiga).

Who, desperate to try and find Madison?   Is keen to see if the Axeman can act as a medium …

Now …

Good?

Oh, yes.

I’m thinking that, with these three episodes, the series is starting to get into its stride.

The plotting’s tight, the action, frenetic: and some of the scenes?

Having moments of sadness, scares and genuine out loud laughs.

Along with some of the strongest women I think I’ve seen in a TV show.

Lange, as ever, is carrying a complicated character, and STILL looking good: even after a formidable performance in series two.

As do both Lily Rabe as Misty, and Sarah Paul as Cordelia.

The real pair of stand outs?

HAVE to be both Kathy Bates, as the slowly reforming racist, Delphine.

And Angela Bassett, as possibly one of the strongest villains I think I’ve seen†.

So far, with Coven?

So good.

*        Who I’d last seen as Agent DiPierro in season 2 of Mr Robot.

†        One of the science fiction series going the rounds when I was growing up, was Blake’s 7.   You’d not have watched the series without coming Across the principle villain, Servalan.   Yes.   I think Marie in Coven is that strong …

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
