Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-6-2022: It Took Seconds

30th June, 2022.

Yes: it’s early!

At least, early for me.

I’m in a weight management group — you need to be, if you’re built like me! — and the next meeting?

Is this morning, at ten.

Given I’d finished a review — video and written — late, last night … ?

I’m looking forward to going back to bed!

~≈🥱≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        30th June, 1972, saw the first leap second added to the clocks.   In other words, added to UTC: Co-ordinated Universal what?

Q2)        The leap was added to keep clocks synchronised with what: Earth’s rotation, Earth’s orbit or the Moon’s orbit?

Q3)        There’s sixty seconds in a what: minute, hour or day?

Q4)        Seconds were defined as a fraction of one of Earth’s days.   They’re now seen as ‘equal to the duration of [roughly nine million] periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the hyperfine levels of the unperturbed ground state of’ an isotope of what: Caesium, Barium or Lanthanum?

Q5)        Finally?   How many leap seconds have been added to the clock since 1972: twenty-six, twenty-seven or twenty-eight?
Yesterday’s answers are in today’s video.

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        29th June, 2022 is a Wednesday.   In which year was it last a Wednesday: 2015, 2016 or 2017?
A1)        2016.

Q2)        Jacques Cartier and his expedition became the first known Europeans to reach Prince Edward Island: on 29th June, 1534.   Prince Edward Island is in which North American country?
A2)        Canada.

Q3)        Hyde Park, Illinois, voted: on 29th June, 1889.   To become part of which US city: New Work, Los Angeles or Chicago?
A3)        Chicago.

Q4)        29th June is the feast day of Saint Cassius.   Cassius was a bishop of Narni. Narni is in which European country: France, Italy or Spain?
A4)        Italy.

Q5)        Finally? 29th June, 1888, saw the birth of Squizzy Taylor.   Squizzy was a notorious gangster from where: the UK, Australia or New Zealand?
A5)        Australia.   (Why was he called ‘Squizzy’?   I have no idea!)
Here’s a thought …
“Analog clocks and watches often have sixty tick marks on their faces, representing seconds … and a ‘second hand’ to mark the passage of time in seconds.”
From the Wikipedia entry on the Second.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

I’m going for mildly ironic unboxing video, Olga.   They’re usually cheaper.   Oh, and most of Jude’s school-friends think they’re weird!
And I will do, Olga: the sooner it’s done, the better!

‡        It’s very worth while, Debbi!   I’ve seen — but not been reviewing — Sky’s version of The Midwich Cuckoos.   I’m two episodes in: and so so, it’s an interesting take on the novel.

Yep, I got that. I think I've only ever tried to find one of those unboxing videos when I wasn't sure if I was missing a piece in something I had received, but otherwise... Perhaps very young children getting a big surprise can be funny, but...
Good luck with the meeting and I hope the guy gets there OK tomorrow. These days the radio is keeping me busy, as I think everybody is trying to get as much done before the holidays as possible and there are all kinds of things going on. I'm going to visit an optitian whose shop has been in the neighbourhood for over 100 years (112 tomorrow, actually), and they're going to open a museum as well. On Friday morning I have to record an "official" meeting about the Cooperative Movement (it's International Day of Cooperatives on Saturday), and some people from the Catalan government and local government are coming to one of la Lleialtat Santsenca, a facility run by the neighbours where they do all kinds of things (it's a fascinating place). On Saturday morning I'm going on a walk where one of the local associations (celebrating the 50th anniversary) are doing a guided tour of interesting local buildings. On Sunday I'm going on one of the monthly walks (but that is not for the radio, as it is on the seafront and not in the neighbourhood), and Monday afternoon I'm going to the rehearsal of a new choir...
I am sure I'll be able to catch up, but if I don't appear at some point, I might have got caught up by all that's going on.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
