Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th August 2023.

17th August, 2023.

It’s official: bits of me are still twanging after a recent fall.

The pleasures of getting older, hey?

At any rate, bits are still twanging … but less painful than they were.

Here’s hoping!

~≈Ç≈~

I mentioned, yesterday, that the DWP, the Department of Work and Pensions had text messaged me: to tell me I’d hear from them by 26/9/2023.

Which is nice to know.

They’ve just messaged, again.

Again!

To let me know they’re going to let me know by 26/9/2023.

OK …

That’s the second time they’ve told me …

~≈Ç≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        17th August, 1985, saw strike action start at the Hormel meat packing plant in Minnesota.    Hormel made what: Spam, Marmite or Coors Beer?

Q2)        Former senior Nazi, Rudolf, died on 17th August, 1987.   In which German prison?

Q3)        17th August, 1896, saw the death of Bridget Driscoll.   She was the first person in UK record to be what: run over by a car, run over by a train or run over by a boat?

Q4)        17th August saw the attempted launch of the Pioneer-0 (Zero) probe.   On 17th August of which year of the 1950s?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Fantasmagorie was released on 17th August, 1908.   The world’s first animated cartoon was made, where: France, Germany or Spain?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        The August Complex Fire started: after lightning strikes on the night of 16th August, 2020.   Where: California, Oregon or Alaska?
A1)        California.   (One of the affected counties was Shasta County.   I can never hear the name of the place, without thinking of C. S. Lewis’ The Horse and His Boy.   The central character shares his name with the place.)

Q2)        Toronto’s stock market temporarily closed down: on 16th August, 1989.   Due to what: solar flares, moon dust or a meteor strike?
A2)        Solar flares.   The radio waves from the flares affected the Exchange’s computers.

Q3)        16th August is the feast day of Saint Roch.   He’s prayed to if you have what: knee problems, hair loss or diarrhoea?
A3)        Knee problems.   (Useful!)

Q4)        Paul Burrell was charged with theft: on 16th August, 2001.   He’d been the butler to whom: Princess Diana, Prince William or Prince Harry?
A4)        Princess Diana.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Gold was discovered in the Yukon: on 16th August, 1896.   The Yukon region is part of which North American country?
A5)        Canada.

Here’s a thought …
“There is nothing worse than having your personal problems become somebody else's entertainment.”
Maureen O’Hara, 17 August 1920 – 24 October 2015.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

Sounds like they met California’s wild-fire problem, head on, Olga!   Up close and personal!   I don’t know if there’s any in California, at the moment: but know there’s one Canadian city being evacuated.
Wish your mother well for me, please, Olga!   Sounds like all of us need Saint Roch … !
(Oh … sounds like Michael Parkinson’s died: I still remember his interviews with Ali … !)

Lucked out, Debbi?   That’s one way of putting it!   :D
At any rate … ?   You’re right: they don’t get much, do they?   The upside — for audiences — is that things like Spotify are VERY easy to use!

Yes, they did find themselves right in the middle of the fires, and they found them several times as they were going around hiking (and the wife got another job in California, so they stayed another year).
Thanks. I will pass your best wishes onto my mother.
Such a shame about Michael Parkinson. I didn't hear about it because I was busy with preparations for the festival at the radio all afternoon (we visited some of the streets they are decorating to see how much headway they're making), and was also writing up some questionnaires for the guests coming to the studio over next week.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
