Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 22-10-2024 — Crisis

22nd October, 2024: Crisis.

Right then …

It’s officially Tuesday: not Wednesday, as I said in the introduction!

One of these days, I’ll get the hang of the calendar, I really will.

At any rate … ?

I found out I lost weight, yesterday: so I’m pleased.

 ~≈⚖️≈~

Oh …

John Cooper Clarke — the poet — has just been on the Today programme.

Apparently, and in a first of its kind move, he’s playing arena gigs: to celebrate World Poetry Day.

I think that means we can have a poem!

 ~≈🕴️≈~

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        22nd October saw the US President announce a naval quarantine.   In which year of the 1960s?

Q2)        Which US President ordered the Quarantine: John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon or Dwight D. Eisenhower?

Q3)        The quarantine was ordered as nuclear missiles had been placed on a Caribbean island.   By which country: the USSR, the People’s Republic of China or Iran?

Q4)        The quarantine ended, on which date in October: 27th October, 28th October or 29th October?

Q5)        Finally … ?   The quarantine was a quarantine … of where: Cuba, Jamaica or Antigua … ?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Portland Cement was patented on 21st October.   Of which year of the 1820s?
A1)        1824.

Q2)        The cement is usually made from what: limestone or dolomite?
A2)        Limestone.

Q3)        It’s named after stone from the Isle of Portland.   Where is the Isle of Portland: Dorset, Sussex, Surrey or Somerset?
A3)        Dorset.

Q4)        Concrete can include Portland cement, sand, gravel and which liquid … ?
A4)        Good old fashioned water.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Portland cement was invented by Joseph Aspdin. Joseph Aspdin was a what: brick layer, hod carrier, glazier or pipe fitter?
A5)        Brick layer.
Here’s a thought …
“The confrontation is widely considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into full-scale nuclear war.”
From the Wikipedia entry on the Crisis.
A song …

And an earworm§ …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!

I think it was the delivery guys, Olga: the contents of the packages were correct, from what I could see.   They were just delivered to the wrong door.   Yesterday’s deliveries, by contrast … ?   Were spot on.   Wouldn’t you know it?
Cheers, Olga: hopefully, I’ll be able to sustain that: it would be nice to get to 101 kilos!

‘Up-coming’, Debbi, or ‘brick layer’?  My Oxford spelling diction tells me ‘brick layer’, and ‘up coming’ can be divided.   Although I’m not sure if we can hyphenate either.
I keep thinking of Portland, Oregon: I’ve a friend from there …

§        “Foundations” is a superb song: about possibly one of the unhealthiest relationships going.   Saying that … ?   When I worked in pubs, I’d see arguments like it, every Friday night!

Grammarly definitely prefers bricklayer. I saw your comment.
There was a whole day event celebrating and promoting the Catalan language on Saturday, very close to where I live, and the radio station had a stall there, although I wasn't on duty. We went to visit them, though, and there were some lovely performance. I thoroughly enjoyed one where they talked about a famous Catalan poet (Joan Salvat-Papasseit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Salvat-Papasseit), with one of the performers playing the guitar and singing sometimes and the other playing the part of the poet and reading some poems. It has been the 100th anniversary of his death this year, and it was quite moving. And a local choir (in fact, they have their offices in the same church tower where the radio station is) also performed with two other visiting choirs. (This is their YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@coralsantmedir8173)
And yes, I hope the weight loss keeps coming. ♥

The 60s were sometimes scary times. Assassinations and what-not. When you're a kid, that's scary.

Ah, Portland, Oregon! Great place! :)

    Got a great bookstore, too!

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
