Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 28th May 2026.

28th May, 2026.

Right … I had my nephew, Jude, over, last night.

And yes: he’d appreciate your help.

Yes: Jude needs you to hit the ‘Like’ button on his lates video!

He’d be thankful, if you did … !

On other fronts … ?

I’ve had a blu-ray delivered: a 4k copy of the Dr Who TV movie, that I tried ripping, yesterday.

I use an app called MakeMKV to copy discs: it’s copied every single 2k disc I’ve thrown at it for the past few years, remarkable well.

But occasionally … ?

It has issues with 4k videos.

Issues that mean updating its library of decryption keys.

After emailing what’s called an ‘AACS .tgz dump file’ to svq@makemkv.com

Something that I did, last night.

Hopefully?

I’ll be ably to copy and transcode the thing, soon.

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum*, Irene† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Debbi scoring five out of five, Mum on four and Irene on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        The research paper known as “On Computable Numbers” was submitted for publication: on 28th May, 1936.   By which scientist?

Q2)        The Kosmos 5 satellite was launched on 28th May, 1962.   By whom: the USA, or Soviet Russia?

Q3)        Carl Richard Nyberg was born on 28th May, 1858.   He invented what: the blowtorch, the electric kettle or the gas-fired womble?

Q4)        Richard Reti was born on 28th May, 1889.   He played what: backgammon, chess or Go?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Maeve Binchy was born on 28th May, 1939.   Her debut novel, Light a Penny Candle, was published in which year of the 1980s?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        27th May is the Feast Day of Saint Julian the Veteran.   He’s said to have served in a what: Germanic tribal army, Roman legion or Spanish tercio?
A1)        Roman legion.   He’s thought to have served with the Legio XI Claudia: a legion originally founded by Julius Caesar.

Q2)        The Pitt-Tierney Dual took place took place on 27th May, 1798: between William Pitt the Younger, and George Tierney.   Which of them was British Prime Minister?
A2)        William Pitt the Younger.

Q3)        Jawaharlal Nehru died on 27th May, 1964: at the age of 74.   He’d been a founder of which Asian nation?
A3)        India.

Q4)        27th May, 1997, saw an outbreak of tornados start.   In which US state?
A4)        Texas.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Wild Bill Hickok was born on 27th May, 1837. He was killed in which South Dakota town … ?
A5)        Deadwood.
Here’s a thought …
“I once tried to write a novel about revenge.   It’s the only book I didn’t finish.   I couldn’t get into the mind of the person who was plotting vengeance.”
Maeve Binchy, 28 May 1939 – 30 July 2012.
And an Kylie Minogue tune …

And an earworm …

The next ten question sets will be on 31st May, and on 3rd, 7th, 11th and 12th June: they’re about Trinity Sunday, Liverpool football club, “The Dreaming City”, the World Cup and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Your comments, and today’s answers, will be published in tomorrow’s Teaser.

AI is avoided when writing these questions.

Answers are as accurate as possible: at the time of writing.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Hello, Mum!   (It was Texas, Mum, rather than Iowa.)

Morning, Irene!   (It was Texas, Irene, rather than Louisiana — and the town in South Dakota was Deadwood.)

‡        Upscale, you say, Debbi … ?   Sounds like Queens is getting gentrified!
Oh, I’ve got two ten question sets on the 11th and 12th June: about the World Cup and Raiders of the Lost Ark.   (I made a note, last year, about the one on the 7th June.   A lot of younger fantasy fans forget about the character in “The Dreaming City”.)

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
