The Daily Teaser — 7-6-2013: Crusaders

Hmmm …

That’s going to kick up a bit of a stink.

Seemingly, the US government’s National Security Agency have managed to strong-arm US phone company, Verizon, to turn over half a ton of data about calls made on their network.

Without needing a warrant.

And, seemingly, has back door access into the servers of several large multinationals: Apple, Google, Microsoft and others: granted, only monitoring connections, rather than content and connections, but even so …

Now, I’ve got nothing to hide.   But I have reservations about my government peeking over my digital shoulder.   I’d rather someone else’s government wasn’t joining them, given the nature of the companies concerned.

Hmmm … Let’s move on, shall we?   Before I start ranting.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi* putting in her answers: along with putting up this post —  and telling us about shoes — she also managed to bag five out of five.

Let’s see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video …

Q1) 7th June, 1099, saw the start of the Siege of Jerusalem: during which crusade … ?
Q2) Was that Crusade ordered into action by Urban 2nd, Urban 3rd or Rural 9th … ?
Q3) It was ordered after Roman Catholic Europe received a call for help:  from the Emperor of where … ?
Q4) After this Crusade, what collective name was given to the states founded in the Middle East, by the Crusaders … ?
Q5) Finally: in the wake of this Crusade, Hugh de Payens founded which famed Crusading order of knights … ?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 6th June, 1984, saw the creation — by computer engineer, Alexey Pajitnov — of which best selling video game … ?
A1) Tetris.
Q2) More to the point, in WHICH country … ?
A2) The (then )USSR.
Q3) The game has been released on lots of platforms: but was especially associated with which handheld device … ?
A3) The Nintendo GameBoy.
Q4) The music from the game became a UK for who: Dr Spot, Dr Splat or Dr Spin … ?
A4) Dr Spin: in truth, Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Nigel Wright.
Q5) And finally … In which year did a computer scientist work out it’s impossible to play the game indefinitely: 1987, 1988 or 1989 … ?
A5) 1988.
I’ll leave you with this thought from Urban 2nd …
“All who die by the way, whether by land or by sea, or in battle against the pagans, shall have immediate remission of sins.”
Words ascribed to Urban 2nd.
And with this piece from the era.

Oh … And as Sir Mervyn King’s just opened his episode of Desert Island Discs, here’s a tune from Lou …

Enjoy your day …

*        I know what you mean, Debbi: some things are worth the effort†, aren’t they … ?

†        Talking of effort, Debbi, did I tell you I’m re-organising my question database … ?    Considering it’s several years worth of questions, you can imagine the work … !

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
