PayPal: A Scam …

You know, I’ve got to admit, I’m something of a Dr Who fan.

You know that, already … !

It’s why Grub and I started Nik Nak and Grub’s Who Peculiar, after all.

But as you’ve probably realised … ?

The original Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar is still active.

Mind me making a confession, though … ?

But, at any rate … ?

At any rate, I’ve been following the rather good Life, Dr Who and ComBom for some time.

Who — earlier today — managed to flag up this little alert, about scams associated with video previews of A Good Man Goes To War, tonights 7th episode.

I made a mental note to keep my eyes peeled, just in case.

But the security scare that almost had me … ?

WASN’T a video …

It was actually a phising attempt, seemingly from PayPal, that almost got me handing over my details, given its apparent authenticity.

Seriously, it weren’t half convincing … !

I did a lot of digging around.

Just to make sure.

And found out that PayPal, never send out this sort of email: or, at least, not from the address, notice@security.org.

Once I’d worked out the email — and the attachment — were fakes?

I immediately alerted PayPal, themselves: they have a specific email address for this sort of thing, spoof@paypal.com.

If you get something like that … ?

Let them know, by forwarding them the suspect mail, and let them know what’s going on.

Oh … And have a read of the helpful advise they sent me …
  • The email uses a generic greeting like ‘Dear user’ or ‘Hello, PayPal member.’ We always address you by your first name and last name or the business name on your PayPal account.
  • The email requests financial and other personal information. For example, an email from PayPal never asks for the numbers of your bank account, debit or credit card, or driver’s license. We also don’t request your email addresses, your full name, your account password, or the answers to your PayPal security questions.
  • The email includes an attachment, a software update to install on your computer, or a hyperlink.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
