Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18-6-2016: Their Finest Hour

Right …

It’s a weekend: and I think I’m only just getting into gear.

Although, obviously, ‘getting into gear’ is a very loose term.

And frankly?

I’m going to have to metaphorically change gear at some point.

Frankly?   I’ve got to go shopping at some point: AND get myself out to work, this afternoon.

Going to be a hell of a long shift …

In other news?

A man called Thomas Mair has been charged with the murder of Jo Cox, MP.

Good!

The quicker we, and her family, can see justice, the better.

And JUST as a matter of personal interest?

I’d like to know the killer’s motivation for this crime: as I’m sure Jo Cox’s family would.

I think the sooner the truth comes out, the better.

But let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring four out of five in the process.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 18th June saw the then Prime Minister deliver his This was their Finest Hour speech.   To whom: the House of Lords, or the House of Commons?
Q2) In which year?
Q3) The speech was delivered by the then Prime Minister.   Who was he?
Q4) The speech was given during World War Two.   By a Prime Minister of what: a Labour party government, coalition government or Conservative government.
Q5) Who was Minister of Defense in that government?
Q6) This speech was the third in a series of three such speeches.   The first, on 13th May, saw the PM offer “Blood, toil, tears and …” what?
Q7) The second, on 4th June, saw the PM claim that “We shall fight them on” … what: the stairs, beaches or lawn?
Q8) All three speeches took place during the Battle of where: Britain, France or El Alamein?
Q9) The speech claimed what was about to begin: the Battle of Britain, the Battle of France or the Battle of El Alamein?
Q10) Finally … According to the speech, people would consider the period whose finest hour: the British Empire and its Commonwealth, the USA’s or the USSR’s?
Here’s yesterday’s (hastily edited!) questions and answers!
Q1) Nova Albion was claimed for England: on 17th June, 1579.   Nova, in this case, means what: old, new, borrowed or blue?
A1) New.
Q2) Who was England’s monarch, at the time?
Q3) Who led the fleet that landed in, and claimed, Nova Albion: Robert Dudley, Francis Drake or Hugh Willoughby?
A3) Sir Francis Drake.
Q4) The ‘Albion’ bit of the name refers to where: Scotland, England or Wales?
A4) Strictly?   All three: as it’s an old name for the Great Britain, the main British Isle, and the one that contains all three of the home nations.
Q5) Finally … Nova Albion is commonly held to be where: California, Oregon or Washington?
I’ll leave you with a peroration …
“Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands.”
From the Peroration of the Their Finest Hour speech.
And this video …

Have a good day …

*        Yes, Olga‡: Britain First’s gone on record, saying it was nothing to do with them.   Although I suspect most of the group’s membership would be applauding the death of an MP who’d done much for refugees.   The group’s been around for a few years: and are a spin-off from the far-right, and equally unpleasant, BNP.   There was ALSO talk on the BBC, yesterday, that the man had had extensive contact with US far-right groups: and, apparently, had got hold of various ‘Build you’r own gun’ type manuals.   (Oh, yeah … I had to edit that question, this morning.   That’s what happened if you get tired, watching exciting shows about vampires … !)

†        It’s a screaming tragedy, Debbi‡!   What gets me?   Is that Britain’s gun crime rates are seriously low: if I’ve understood Wikipedia’s figures, correctly, Britain had something like .24 gun-related deaths per 100, 000 in 2014: compared to the USA’s 10.54!   We’ve tighter gun laws, which helps.   And, as I mentioned to Olga: it sounds — from the media reports I’d seen — he’d got gun building manuals from various far-right groups in the US.

‡        Sorry about the scores, ladies: but, strictly speaking, ‘Albion’ was used to describe the island of Great Britain: the MAIN UK island.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
