* Yeah, it was one of those, wasn’t it, Olga … ? Just don’t ask about going to work on Wednesday. Someone decided to jump in front of the train I was due take. I’m sympathetic: I’ve suffered with depression for many years, and had suicidal thoughts. But it left me very angry. And feeling more sympathy for my fellow passengers, delayed as I was, and the station staff having to deal with the situation. AND the driver. It turns out he was back after medical leave. After someone jumped in front of the last train he was driving. At ANY rate … ? My main hard-drive’s quiet: for now. And I’ve got a plan in place that can deal with it’s failure. I’m just grateful I’ve got that back up drive.
† Now, there’s a couple of phrases, Debbi. I don’t think I’ve heard either for a while, to be honest. I think fag dropped out of fashion a few years ago: as I recall, most of us going a cigarette break were as or more likely to say they’re be going for a smoke, than having a fag. Or, and poofter? Bloody hell, there’s: I don’t think I’ve heard that for a while. I think poof’s more frequent, and poofter’s more often used in Australia, than the UK. The one term of sexually derived abused I’ve noticed? Would be nonce: old term for child abuser … (I seem to recall bacon was the associated bit of rhyming slang‡: bacon, short for bacon bonce, rhyming slang for nonce.)
‡ Most of the time, people seem to use the non-rhyming bit of the rhyming slang term. And I think a lot of kids — especially in big inner cities — tend to not necessarily use older form of slang. They’d use a lot picked up from Jamaican slang.

I'm a psychiatrist and have seen my share of people with suicidal thoughts and lost some patients to it. I started my training in Eastbourne and there it was common for people to jump off Beachy Head (a beautiful place. I suggested they should put A&E at the bottom of the cliff). We always had people coming from all over the place too. And several of the patients went that way (I also met a couple who survived the fall. I guess they jumped from the wrong place and a ledge broke the fall. It was curious because one of them, who suffered from schizophrenia, improved remarkably afterwards. Still ill but more responsive to medication. Not a recommended method of treatment, I hasten to add). That method didn't involve anybody else, though, but I know how people who are in the depths of depression can't see or think about anything else. It's the darkest of nights, indeed. I saw your comments about fags... It might depend on where people are from. In particular with patients there were many still calling them fags, although mostly not the young patients. Not sure if you saw my message on Twitter, but good luck and enjoy your day off.
Thanks for the update, Paul! All I have to go by here is Monty Python. Old stuff! :)

I remember watching the Columbia (after it's first mission) land. It was displayed on a huge TV screen in the Student Union at University of Maryland. So thrilling! Back in the days before online streaming, etc. :)
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
