Sunday 24 June 2018

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 24th June, 2018

24th June, 2018.

Yes: it’s a Sunday: one where I’ve actually had something approaching sleep.

Which helps: as it’s a Sunday where I’m up early to get to work for nine.

Fair enough.

But, given the delays on the train, this week?

I’m concerned that today — as the past few Sundays — there’s going to be a bus replacement service …

As lovely as a bus ride is … ?

I’d rather be on the train.

It is, in these situations?

Quicker …

Let’s get a move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring four out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 24th June, 1622, saw Portuguese forces defeat the Dutch: in the Battle of Macau.   Macau is now in which country?
Q2) 24th June, 1995, saw the Rugby World final played: between New Zealand and South Africa.   It was played in which South African city?
Q3) The leader of the Democratic Ulster Unionists announced Northern Ireland was on the verge of Civil War: on 24th June, 1986.   Who was that leader?
Q4) Miguel López de Legazpi founded the capital of the Philippines: on 24th June, 1571.   What IS that capital?
Q5) Finally … Brian Johnston was born: on 24th June, 1912.   He was one of the best known commentators on which sport?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 23rd June, 1951, saw the christening and launch of the SS United States.   SS, in this case, stands for what?
Q2) 23rd June, 1972, saw Anthony Barber, the then chancellor, decide to float what: the pound, an idea or the EU butter mountain?
A2) The pound.
Q3) Who went on a tour of the conquered city of Paris: on 23rd June, 1940?
Q4) 23rd June, 47BC saw the birth of Ceasarion: king of Egypt.   Who Was his mother?
A4) Cleopatra 7th Philopator.   The Cleopatra.   Pharaoh of Egypt, lover of Julius Caesar and suicidally fascinated by snakes.
Q5) Finally … 23rd June, 2014, saw the last chemical weapons removed from which country?
A5) Syria.
Here’s a thought …
“I don’t understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.”
Jeff Beck, born 24 June 1944.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        I’ll keep my fingers crossed for him, Olga.   Here’s hoping it doesn’t get a last minute cancellation!

†        Ah HA!   The return of the Indie Flick Chick, eh, Debbi.   Might be an idea … !

I hope the journey work is not too bad. Thanks on behalf of my friend and her husband. I'll keep you posted on any news (in theory it is not a very complicated operation, but there was a problem the first time around, so one never knows. Fingers crossed).

Now, there's a game that sounds baffling. Cricket, that is.

I wonder if there's a market for a book like "Cricket for Dummies"? :)

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
