Thursday 7 June 2018

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 7th June, 2018.

7th June, 2018.

Yes: it’s officially official …

In amongst other things: an extensive film collection, a job, an entertaining nephew … ?

I have … a crap phone!

One that’s only a few months old.

I got it — on offer, I should add — to replace an older Sony: one with an ageing battery, and not a lot of RAM.

I could only afford to replace it … with a cheap Alcatel with a newer battery … and the same amount of storage.

Both … ?   Run out of storage the minute I open the Facebook app.

One day … ?   I’ll have the cash to make the choice: of exactly WHAT phone to replace it with.

Right now?   I’m wondering whether I should delete the FB app!

While we’re ON technology?

I had a ZX Spectrum, when I was young.

So followed the story of the troubled ZX Vega⁺ — a remake backed by no less a person than Clive Sinclair, himself — with a certain amount of interest.

Unfortunately?

It seems Indiegogo has called in the debt collectors: as Retro Computers, that company behind the Vega⁺?

Have defaulted …

Amidst increasing internal arguments: and no sign of any working devices …

That’s a blow for us that would have loved to see the thing succeed.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with both scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 7th June was — in the Roman Empire — the festival of Ludi Piscatorii.   It was a holiday for whom: bakers, fishermen or tree surgeons?
Q2) 7th June is also the feast day of Colmán of Dromore.   Where Was he from: England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales?
Q3) 7th June, 1868, marks the birth of architect and designed, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.   The Mackintosh designed Lighthouse, in Glasgow, was the former office of which newspaper?
Q4) 7th June, 1977, saw the Queen start the celebrations that marked her Silver Jubilee.   How many years on the throne did this mark?
Q5) Finally … Mexico City was captured on 7th June, 1863.   By forces from which European country?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) Alexander 3rd of the Byzantine Empire died playing tzykanion: on 6th June, 913.   Tzykanion was a Byzantine version of which sport: football, polo or rugby?
A1) Polo.
Q2) The first drive in cinema in the USA opened, in Camden: on 6th June, 1933.   Cinema and town are in which US state?
Q3) Indian troops raided the Golden Temple, in Amritsar: on 6th June, 1984.   The raid was ordered by the then Indian Prime Minister.   Who was she?
A3) Mrs Indira Gandhi.
Q4) 6th June is UN Russian Language Day.   The standardised version of Russian is based on the dialect spoken in which city?
A4) Moscow.
Q5) Finally … 6th June, 1975, saw the UK vote to stay in the European Economic Community.   The EEC was eventually absorbed into what?
A5) The EU, or European Union.
Here’s a thought …
“I’d hate to be a teetotaller. Imagine getting up in the morning and knowing that’s as good as you’re going to feel all day.”
Dean Martin, June 7, 1917 – December 25, 1995.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Will do, Olga.   Usually these things tend to turn up when there’s an anniversary, or someone finds lost footage.   That’s how I got to see Metropolis: the rights owners released a restored version after footage was found in Argentina.   (GOT to admit, I never saw much in the way of music festivals: I think, though, if I’d had the money, I’d’ve gone to a few more science fiction conventions.)

†        Oh, one thing I DO know, Debbi … ?   It seems Star Trek Discovery’s due a 2019 release … potentially … !   Which seems a little long!   And I seem to recall hearing that the Dr Who 11th series trailer will get an airing during the BBC’s coverage of the World Cup final: about five weeks away.   That’s possibly the only reason I’d be watching …

I can imagine! Thanks for the song. My dad was a big Dean Martin fan, and it brings good memories.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
