Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17-1-2019: Popeye

17th January, 2019.

Yeah … that’s mildly depressing.   And was a lot more depressing, last night.

The interview I went for, yesterday?

I didn’t get: the employers emailed me, last night, with the bad news.

That was both depressing — I think my view of the film I saw, last night, was affected — and unwanted.

I also heard from the job I was interviewed for, last week: in London.

I didn’t get that, either: but I was half expecting that: as the work force seemed to be such a young crowd.

This morning sees me feeling a touch better — a good night sleeps helps — and keen to get jobhunting, again.

And wondering whether I’ve bagged the job I was interviewed for, on Tuesday.

We will just have to see.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with Olga on five out of five, and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 17th January saw Popeye make his debut appearance.   In which comic strip?
Q2) In which year did he first appear?
Q3) The strip was written by Elzie Crisler … who … ?
Q4) Popeye was intended as a one off character.   Who was the strip’s main character?
Q5) Who was that character’s (then) boyfriend?
Q6) Popeye’s main rival in the strip is called what?
Q7) The Goons — the UK comedy troop — named themselves after a group of Popeye characters led by whom?
Q8) Who’s the captain of the Black Barnacle?
Q9) J. Wellington Wimpy would ask for hamburger, today: and gladly pay you … when?
Q10) Finally … ?   Popeye is famously fond of which vegetable?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 16th January, 1492 saw Queen Isabella 1st presented with the first grammar of which language?
A1) Spanish.
Q2) 16th January, 1909, saw the Shackleton Expedition find what: the magnetic north pole or the magnetic south pole?
Q3) TWA Flight 3 crashed on 16th January, 1942.   Which film star died on the flight?
Q4) 16th January, 1412, saw the House of Medici named as The Pope’s bank.   What’s the name of the modern Vatican Bank?
A4) The Institute for the Works of Religion, or Istituto per le Opere di Religione: the IOR.   (Which sounds only slightly less iffy than the Medicis.)
Q5) Finally … ?   16th January, 1707, saw the Scottish Parliament pass the Act of Union.   This lead to the formation of what: the United Kingdom, Great Britain or the Commonwealth?
A5) Great Britain.   (We only became the UK in 1800, or so: when the Kingdom of Ireland joined.)
Here’s a thought …
“Ja’ think I’m a cowboy?”
Popeye’s first line in the comic strip, therefore his first line in any medium.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        One of these day’s, Olga, I’ll have to do a Man of La Mancha set.   Once I’ve read it, of course!   Will Popeye do as a replacement, until then … ?

†        Oh, yes!   Oh, by the way, Debbi: has this piece hit the US?   Other caffeinated beverages ARE available!

So sorry to hear about the job, even if the set up sounded a bit complicated to get to. Fingers crossed on the other interview. In an ideal world there would be a flexible job that allowed you to work from home and save you all the hassle... (although a routine that gets us out of the house regularly can be good as well).
I hope everything works out for the best.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
