Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 18-1-2019: X-Ray Specs

18th January, 2019.

Yes: it’s depressingly the case.

I’ve had three interviews in the past fortnight.

And got word, last night, that the remaining company … didn’t want me.

It’s the usual excuse: they’d found other, more suitable, candidates.

It’s depressing.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with all three scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) Henry L. Smith took the first formal x-ray picture: on 18th January of which year?
Q2) X-rays themselves had been discovered by William … whom?
Q3) X-rays are used in medicine to examine a body’s insides.   Along-side an x-ray what: detector, spectacles or monitor?
Q4) X-rays can also be used for the elimination of life forms in a given region.   This is also known as which ‘S’?
Q5) Finally … x-rays are a kind of electromagnetic … what?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 17th January saw Popeye make his debut appearance.   In which comic strip?
Q2) In which year did he first appear?
A2) 1929.
Q3) The strip was written by Elzie Crisler … who … ?
A3) Elzie Crisler Segar.
Q4) Popeye was intended as a one off character.   Who was the strip’s main character?
A4) Olive Oyl.
Q5) Who was that character’s (then) boyfriend?
A5) Harold Ham Gravy: also known as just Ham Gravy.
Q6) Popeye’s main rival in the strip?   Is called what?
A6) Bluto.   (He’s also know — on film — as Brutus, and Timothée in various French speaking nations. )
Q7) The Goons — the UK comedy troop — named themselves after a group of Popeye characters led by whom?
A7) Alice the Goon.
Q8) Who’s the captain of the Black Barnacle?
A8) The Sea Hag.
Q9) J. Wellington Wimpy would ask for hamburger, today: and gladly pay you … when?
A9) Tuesday.   (The Wimpy chain of burger restaurants is named for him.   I was also told, many years ago, that John Landis’ ‘See you next Wednesday’ gag was derived from this: apparently, though, it’s lifted from 2001: A Space Odyssey.)
Q10) Finally … ?   Popeye is famously fond of which vegetable?
A10) Spinacia oleracea: or spinach.
Here’s a thought …
“Too many radiologists still believe there is a risk from a chest x-ray. Few radiologists can explain radiation to the patient in words the patient can understand.”
John Cameron.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Actually, the transport for the last two jobs were comparatively easy, Olga: the London one was  tricky, though.   It was three different trains!   Oh, I agree: getting out of the house is definitely good! (I’ve an extra thing.   Working from home means having a PC, as most companies don’t have access to the Mac versions of the software.   And I don’t think the job centre would spring for one.)

†        I doubt it, Debbi, you’re tougher than the Duke of Edinburgh: the queen’s husband?   He’s 97, and was in a car crash, yesterday: he walked away from the thing getting flipped over!   (It’s the only thing that’s knocked Brexit off the headlines … )

  3. "with all three scoring five out of five."

Well 2 people answered your quiz and there were 10 questions.

both people answered different days so 1 got 10 /10 and the other got 9 /10.

If I had been as slipshod as you when I was working as a Programmer I would have been out of a job in no time.

We took our time and double checked all our coding and fully tested our programs. Yes programs failed in use due to unforeseen circumstances.

I once felt a bit of a failure when I went for 10 interviews and was only offered 9 jobs. The one that turned me down said I was too young.

I did see that the new Vape shop that is where Game used to be was looking for staff.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
