Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th February, 2020.

17th February, 2020.

Yep: I’ve officially spent last night in front of a computer screen.

Reviewing The Haunting of Villa Diodati, last night’s episode of Dr Who.

Did I tell you I’m knackered as a result?

I’m knackered as a result.

Still …

I can go back to bed later …

Possibly … ?

After I’ve done a little fiddling about.

Remember me mentioning that I’m potentially getting hold of a cheap laptop?

And trying to set up an Ubuntu installer for it?

The app I’ve got, that — theoretically — lets me do this, seems to be having issues.

I have managed to find instructions on how to do this, via a set of Terminal commands.

All well and good: except that — as far as I can tell — I need to enable my root account: and set up a password for it.

Not necessarily something I’m comfortable about: as the root account is too powerful for every day use.

I think … I’ll have to use my old MacPro: then let you know …

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five, and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 17th February, 1864, saw the H. L. Hunley become the first submarine to sink a battleship.   During which war?
Q2) 17th February, 1934, saw the birth of Australian comedian, Barry Humphries.   On, of his characters, Sir Les Patterson, is a cultural … what?
Q3) 17th February, 1934, saw the birth of actress, Patricia Routledge.   In which series does she play Hyacinth Bucket?
Q4) 17th February, saw the first publication of influential US magazine, Newsweek.   17th February of which year of the 1930s?
Q5) Finally … ?   Adnan Menderes survived a plane crash: on 17th February, 1959.   Menderes was prime minister of where?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 16th February saw the Council of Lithuania adopt the Act that made it Independent.   Independent from where?
A1) Germany.   Germany had occupied Lithuania in 1915, during World War 1: after Russia had occupied it.
Q2) The Act was issued 16th February of which year … ?
A2) 1918.
Q3) The Act named which city as Lithuania’s capital?
A3) Vilnius.
Q4) 1990 saw Lithuania become independent, again: in the run up to the dissolution of what?
A4) The Soviet Union.
Q5) Finally … ?   What’s Lithuania’s one official language?
Here’s a thought …
“There is no more terrible fate for a comedian than to be taken seriously.”
Barry Humphries, born 17 February 1934.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Glad to be of help, Olga.   That’s kind of why I use the Creative Commons license for the Teasers!   Everyone can use them!   As for courts cases … ?   Well …

†        Just a smidgeon, Debbi!   Oh, have you caught The Haunting of Villa Diodati, yet?   That is one fantastic episode.

    Q2) Attaché
Q3) 1929 not 1934. I wondered why I couldn’t find her… A long night, I guess. Oh, Keeping Up Appearances (I must say I know quite a few women very much like her, or knew, at any rate).
    Q4) 1933
    Q5) Turkey
Good luck with the computer programme. I'm always wary of making major changes, but you know much more about computers.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
