Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 12th June, 2020.

12th June, 2020.

Yes: it’s the case I wake up … with earworms … !

Lady Gaga’s Love Game, so you know …

Why?

I don’t know.

All I can tell you is that ‘I wanna take a ride,’ line has been banging off the sides of my skull for the last few hours.

Arrrghgh!

In other news … ?

I’ve been reading Le Guin’s The Wind’s Twelve Quarters and The Compass Rose: a combined volume of two of her short story collections.

I finished one — The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas — the night before last.   And The Day Before the Revolution, last night.

The latter?   Is incredibly powerful: and one you should read for yourself.

The former?   Well …

If The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, about a city whose perfection comes at a dreadful cost, doesn’t have real world parallels?

I don’t know what piece of fantasy does.
“The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.”

The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, Ursula Le Guin.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Trevor*, Olga† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with all three scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) 12th June is Helsinki Day.   Helsinki is the capital of where?
Q2) 12th June is Russia Day.   Russia’s flag is white, blue and … what?
Q3) 12th June is Dia dos Namorados — Lover’s Day — where: Portugal, Brazil or Angola?
Q4) Purely by coincidence, it’s Loving Day in the USA: marking the day US courts ruled state laws against miscegenation were unconstitutional.   Miscegenation is a mixed race … what?
Q5) Finally … ?   12th June marks the feast 108 Martyrs of World War Two.   The Martyrs were killed by the Nazis: and from which European country?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 11th June, 1938, saw the start of the Battle of where: Wuhai, Wuhan or Wuhu?
A1) Wuhan.
Q2) Paul Boatang, Diane Abbott and Bernie Grant were elected to Parliament: as the UK’s first Black MPs.   On 11th June of which year?
A2) 1987.
Q3) 11th June, 2004, saw the Cassini-Huygens probe make a close fly-by of Phoebe.   Phoebe is a moon of where?
A3) Saturn.
Q4) 11th June, 1572, saw the birth of playwright, Ben Jonson.   His A Tale of a Tub was a what: a comedy or tragedy?
A4) A comedy.
Q5) Finally … ?   11th June, 1959, saw the birth of actor and comedian, Hugh Laurie.   What was the name of the drama society he was president of, whilst at Cambridge University?
A5) The Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club: commonly called Footlights.
Here’s a thought …
“I take as my guide the hope of a saint: In crucial things, unity; in important things, diversity; in all things, generosity.”
George H. W. Bush, June 12, 1924 – November 30, 2018.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        I bet you’re glad it’s Friday, Trevor!

†        I don’t think I’ve got very far with GIMP, either, Olga!   Beyond a few bits of twitching around.   Some of the backgrounds can make for interesting stuff!   And cheers: I can only hope Google and Blogger make the same decision as Wordpress!   (I don’t think I’m the only person complaining.)

†        What can I tell you, Debbi?   Except I should maybe look at export to Wordpress.   Saying that … ?   I’d have 12 years worth of stuff to transfer over: it’s intimidating … !

Hopefully Google and Blogger will sort themselves out. Although I used a plugin to move my content when I started the new blog (and it was from Wordpress.com to Wordpress.org, which one might think it's more straightforward), only some of the posts were really transferred. I left the original blog alive just linking the two, with the thought that at some point I might want to stop paying and simply resort to the free blog, ads and all, but of course, the links to the new blog wouldn't go anywhere. In any case, most of what I publish these days are reviews, and I write those on Word and keep copies (and I post them to Goodreads as well), so they should be somewhere, but yes, it's a problem if you want to keep track of everything. And twelve years it's a long time. Although, I must confess I also love the idea of starting afresh. All the best!

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.

*   I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.

†   Your Facebook, X/Twitter, Blogger, Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn profile are acceptable. I also like seeing folks webpages.
