Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 28-11-2021: Panama.

28th November, 2021.

As I said in a post, last night … ?

I’m something of a techno-fetishist.

Or, at least, a Mac fan.

You’d possibly noticed.

I’m one who — for want of something better to do … ? — has been trying to revive my again Mac mini: the one I nicknamed Bruce, the one I bought many years ago, and the one I used to start this blog.

And the one I was hoping to use to play a few retro games.

Unfortunately … ?

The main hard drive’s gone: which means complicated repairs, trying Recovery Mode, or just plain trying to install the OS to an external USB stick.

We’ll just have to see, won’t we?

In other news?

You’re possibly aware a new COVID 19, named Omicron, is now doing the rounds.

A variant that’s a lot more transmissible, and coming in from Southern Africa, and that’s seen the government of the UK reimpose mask-wearing in England: as from Tuesday.

What’s more, it seems there’s two cases in a named town in Essex.

Yep: Brentwood.

Frankly?

I’m hoping we avoid another lock-down.

Given the Restart scheme is mandatory, and could lead to sanctions were I to not attend?

I’d hate to get caught out.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Edith†, Debbi‡ and Mum^, putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, Mum on four and Edith on two.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        28th November is Independence Day in Panama.   Marking its independence from where: Spain or Portugal?

Q2)        Panama became independent in which year: 1821, 1822 or 1823?

Q3)        Panama stretches from Central America to where: North America or South America?

Q4)        What’s Panama’s capital city?

Q5)        Finally?   Panama uses two currencies.   The Balboa is one.   What’s the other: the US dollar, the Canadian Dollar or the Pound Sterling?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Pennsylvania Station was fully opened to the public: on 27th Novemebr, 1910.   It’s in which US city: New York, Los Angeles or Harrisburg?
A1)        New York.

Q2)        The US Army War College opened on 27th November, 1901.   It’s in which US state?
A2)        Pennsylvania.

Q3)        Makhnovshchina was formed on 27th November, 1918.   In what’s now where: the Ukraine, Georgia or Serbia?
A3)        Ukraine.

Q4)        The President of France vetoed the UK’s membership of the Common Market: on 27th November, 1967.   Who was that French President … ?
A4)        Charles de Gaulle.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Charles Dvorak was born on 27th November, 1878.   He was an Olympic class what: long jumper, pole vaulter or sprinter?
A5)        Pole vaulter.
Here’s a motto …
“Pro Mundi Beneficio.”
“For the benefit of the world.”
Panama’s motto.
And an anthem …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Some of the streets in Chester look amazing, Olga: those old timber framed houses cost a fortune in insurance.   An old friend grew up in a fairly recent one: that dated back to the mid Victorian age.
Oh, and I know a fellow quiz master who’s up in Edinburgh: the Old Town is supposed to be quite the thing.

I’m going to have to keep try and check that out, Edith: you’re a musical education!

‡        Funny old thing, Debbi: as far as I can tell, the Brass Tortoise that’s used on Brutha, was based on a real world item.
        Or alleged item …

^        Hello, Mum!

  1. As an extra thought on the COVID front … ?

I have no big problem with a potential Lockdown: beyond the possibility of a Sanction.

But if we do get Lockdown? I hope the Government reintroduces Furlough and the £20 uplift

  2. Q1) Spain

Q2) 1821 (although it was part of the Republic of Gran Colombia, not an independent country as such)

    Q3) South America

    Q4) Panama city

    Q5) The US Dollar
I've only visited Chester once, and it is beautiful, and I agree about Edinburgh. Funnily enough, a friend of mine, who lives in Sheffield but works in London (at the LSE, she is a lecturer there) sent me a message yesterday, as she was thinking of bringing her daughter, who is celebrating her 17th birthday next month, to Barcelona for a visit, and I told her to check the restrictions travelling and all that, because with the new variant and the cases in the UK there will be further restrictions on travel, and she told me they'd probably go somewhere in the UK, and mentioned Edinburgh. The Portuguese had already decided to impose a lockdown the first week of January, and that was before the discovery of this new variant... I wonder, because I had put my name down to volunteer for a similar event to Children in Need and all those big charity events (to be at the telephone center here in Barcelona, this time managing one of the tables of volunteers), la Marató de TV3, but it is scheduled for the 19th of December, and I wonder... And we have quite a few things to do with the radio coming up as well.
    Fingers crossed all goes well...

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
