Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 23-12-2021: Saint Thorlak of Iceland

23rd December 2021.

It’s officially official: I’m in a rush, today.

It’s payday: so I want to get bills out of the way.

But I’ve ALSO got to be in Chelmsford, today, for my first face to face meeting with the Resort scheme: the Work Programme the Job Centre’s put me on.

All that, and do leg exercises … ?

Oy … !

~≈§≈~

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five, Debbi on four and Mum on two.

The day also saw Trevor^ leaving everyone a Xmas message.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1)        23rd December is the feast day of Thorlak Thorhallsson: the patron saint of Iceland.   He’s also the patron saint of whom: fishermen, farmers or milk maids?

Q3)        What’s Iceland’s capital?

Here’s a thought …
“His status as a saint did not receive official recognition from the Catholic Church until 14 January 1984, when John Paul II canonised him and declared him the patron saint of Iceland.”
From the Wikipedia entry on Saint Thorlak.
And music inspired by the saint …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Oh, I know, Olga.   I know Mum’s getting the hang go the online world, but it’s not the case for everyone.   I know one of my neighbour’s — who’s my sort of age — has had to sign up for a digital skills course, JUST to get an idea.   As for health?   Oh boy, I know what you mean.   The NHS site isn’t bad … but my surgery’s is … well, it could be better designed: it’s busy.   The (potential) upside to Tuesday’s bank incident?   Is that — assuming the text message is genuine — my bank’s sent me a text message to say they’re going to put £100 in my account.   It’d be handy, especially as I want to revive an old Mac mini.   But I’ll believe it when I see it.
Oh … my review of No Time To Die will be up, tonight.   And I had the Moderna booster: my arm ached for a couple of days, but that was it.

        Hello, Mum!

Your’s turned up a couple of days ago, Debbi!   Glad to know mine got there!   Oh … I thought this might grab you … !   Oh … what’s you’re thinking on a new James Bond … ?   I think Henry Cavill — Superman — would be good: but he’s not saying anything definite …

^        Your’s card got here first Trevor: thanking you, and Happy Christmas!

Good luck with fitting everything in. Oh, although it was totally unplanned, I ended up watching West Side Story (Steven Spielger's version) yesterday. I got a free membership card for one of the cinemas here a while back, and they sometimes send invitations for previews, etc. Yesterday they sent one for a live Jazz Session plus West Side Story. It was quite wonderful, as it was a life jazz trio and a singer (they sang quite a few variations on West Side Story songs, but also other jazz standards, and they were pretty good), then they gave us a sandwich and a beer (or water, neither my mother nor I drink. The sandwich was serrano ham), and then the movie. I am not sure I'd say it's better than the previous version, but it is very good as well, and some of the changes work very well (Rita Moreno plays the part of Doc, the owner of the local shop. In this case, she is his widow, and the story goes that she is Puerto Rican, of course, but married a gringo, so she's a bit in between). The territory they are fighting over is going to be demolished to build the Lincoln Centre, so it is all even more redundant, Bernardo is also a boxer, Tony has been in prison for a year, for almost killing another gang member, and the casting is a bit more appropriate (not only where they are from, but also their ages, I thought). And I think there is a bit more emphasis placed on the girl who runs after the Sharks and wants to be one of them (here it seems to go beyond just being a tomboy). Although some of the settings of the songs are different, and even who sings them, the choreography is pretty similar, and some of the set pieces are also close to the original movie version.
It was a very long evening, but well worth it, although considering the curfew should start tonight, not many like those for a while. (I think people might not have booked as much as they expected with the health situation as it is and so close to Christmas, and as I believe these viewings are sponsored, it was better for them to get some bums on seats. There were big gaps between couples of seats and they had security measures in place as well, so...)
Oh, and thanks for the heads up on Moderna. Fingers crossed!
    Thanks

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
