I’ve had a look at the BBC’s online weather report for my area, this morning.
This part of Brentwood has a predicted high of 31°.
That’s going to be uncomfortable for many of us.
I’m also very aware that there’s an amber heat warning for England, today: ahead of the red* warning for tomorrow and Tuesday.
There’s also the piece that tells us London’s see over eight hundred grass fires in London, since June.
Spain and Portugal? Have wildfires.
I know there’s a lot of climate deniers out there.
And can’t help but wonder what they make of Britain’s first extreme heat warning.

* The Radio four news made a very good point, this morning. That the usual average human body temperature is ~37°. Quite what a 41° high will do to us, healthy or not? I don’t know. I can’t imagine it being pleasant.
I’m also thinking that SWEP — the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol that comes in to force in winter, and is designed to help rough sleepers — may not come into play in this heat. It’s designed for winters!
† It sounds like you and the gang got off lightly, Olga: I’m glad it went well! And opening windows is good. Especially around here: we, thankfully, have regular breezes in my area. It’s needed: I know I feel the heat in this weather!
Mo is amazing: and an asset to the nation. But talking of sportsmen? Have you heard of Ryan Jones, the former Wales Rugby Union captain? He’s been diagnosed with a form of early onset dementia … at 41. Ye gods, Terry Pratchett was 59, and that’s young! Ryan says he’s scared: and I can’t say I blame him!

The advice on opening windows is to have the blinds (we have blinds here, although I know they aren't that common there) down when the sun is hitting the windows, to avoid the air inside getting hot, and then open them when it isn't sunny (ideally at night). Here, at my mother's we have the added problem (I know I've mentioned it) that there is a bar downstairs, and they install tables outside, so it gets very noisy, especially on the weekends. And, because we are such a low storey, there is the risk that somebody might climb up the windows (it has happened before, although, touch wood and fingers crossed, not to my parents yet. But next door, before they moved in, they were renovating the flat, and the workers left the windows open, and somebody went in and stole their tools, so...
It is very sad about that player. Rugby is a dangerous sport. Hitting your head repeatedly is bad news (boxers have the same issue, and although the American football players wear helmets, the protection is not 100%). Many years back I had a patient in his mid-forties who also suffered from an early form of dementia. His case was quite weird, because he ended up in a unit for elderly patients, as he was at risk from patients of his own age. He simply couldn't remember what things were called, at that point. So you would ask him if he liked gardening, and he wouldn't remember what gardening was. If you explained it to him, he would understand the concept, but he couldn't connect the word and what it meant. It was very difficult to have a conversation with him and to know if he actually understood anything that was said to him. They were trying to find him a place, but his age it was extremely difficult, because he was physically fit, and although he wasn't aggressive at that point, if he became aggressive later, in a ward or a nursing home full of fragile elderly patients, it could be really risky. Perhaps a unit for people who had suffered head injuries, but the problem there would be that others would improve with time, and he would only deteriorate. Very complicated.
The issue with the homeless and the weather is something I've also wondered about.
Climate deniers will say that the climate had changed and gone through similar cycles before human beings were on Earth. That's definitely true, and, of course, we aren't the only thing affecting the changes, but we are making matters far worse. The Earth will survive, but not as we know it, and not with us in it.
