Saturday 5 August 2023

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 5th August 2023.

5th August, 2023,

Right … it’s Saturday.

And?

Frankly, I’m grateful I’m not in the south west, or in Northern Ireland.

There’s serious weather warnings out for those regions.

I grant you it’s not looking good, here in Brentwood.

But Danger to Life tags have been add to the warnings for Storm Antoni*.

That sounds serious.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw OlgaMum‡ and Debbi¶ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        5th August, 2021, saw the Australian state of Victoria enter its fourth lockdown period.   As a result of which disease: HIV/AIDS, Covid 19 or Hansen’s Diseases?

Q2)        5th August is one of the feast days of Saint Emygdius.   He’s the patron saint of where: San Francisco, Los Angeles or New York?

Q3)        5th August, 1940, saw the Soviet Union annex where: Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia?

Q4)        Erich Weiss was buried alive for ninety-one minutes: on 5th August, 1926.   Weiss performed under which stage name?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Joan Hickson was born on 5th August, 1906.   She played which Agatha Christie character: Ariadne Oliver, Miss Marple or Miss Lemon?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        4th August, 1578, saw Cardinal Henry named as King of which European country: Spain, Portugal or Romania?
A1)        Portugal.   (As a Catholic clergyman, he was bound to celibacy: and left no heirs.   From what I’ve understood, it caused a dynastic crisis.)

Q2)        4th August is the feast day of Saint Sithney: the patron saint of mad dogs.   He’s also a patron of a small village, where: Cornwall, Devon or Somerset?
A2)        Cornwall.

Q3)        4th August, 1873, saw the US 7th Cavalry clash with the Cheyenne, and Lakota Sioux.   Who led the Seventh Cavalry?
A3)        Lieutenant Colonel George Custer.

Q4)        NASA launched its Phoenix spacecraft on 4th August of which year of the 21st Century?
A4)        2007.

Q5)        Finally … ?   4th August is Constitution Day in the Cook Islands.   The Islands are where: the South Pacific, North Pacific or North Atlantic?
A5)        The South Pacific.

Here’s a thought …
“Why don’t we remake some of our bad pictures — I’d love another shot at The Roots of Heaven (1958) — and make them good?”
John Huston, August 5, 1906 – August 28, 1987.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        With a name like Storm Antoni?   I can’t help but think it’s Gaudí’s revenge for getting run over by that tram.   Except that was in Barcelona, not Bath …

I’m quietly saying nothing about the terrible twos, Olga: my sisters will be giving me funny looks.   So will my mother, now I think of it!
Put like that?   Star Trek Strange New Worlds may appeal: the episodes are self contained stories.   The same goes for Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels§.

        Hello, Mum.

That it does, Debbi!   I don’t think Douglas Adams had singing Klingons in mind!   (Debbi, you really have to see this episode!   Celia Rose Gooding — much like Nichelle Nichols — is an impressive singer.   As does Jess Bush, who plays Nurse Chapel: she’s got a very smokey, whisky sippin’, voice.)

§        It helps if you’ve read/watched some of the others, Olga.   But it truly isn’t necessary.   You can dip into both, without seeing any others.

  1. Q1) Covid 19

    Q2) Los Angeles

    Q3) Latvia

Q4) Harry Houdini (under water. Not sure you’d say buried...)

    Q5) Miss Marple
Here we had storm Patricia. It brought the temperature down here, but the rain wasn't too spectacular. It was much worse in other places. Antoni doesn't reach us here. I'm sure he Gaudí wouldn't want to damage Sagrada Familia...
I'll put the series (and books) on my list. I have watched the original Star Trek and some random episodes of the newer series, but that was quite a long time ago...

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
