Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 31-12-2023 — The Big Fat Review of the Year.

31st December, 2023: The Big Fat Review of the Year.

Just as a thought … ?

Can someone remind me to not upload to iCloud … when I’m trying to upload files to YouTube?

I’ve extra iCloud storage: that I’m now using to store large files on.

Or, at least, I’m in the process of upload large amounts of files on.

Or to, I should say!

At any rate, I’m uploading files to my iCloud storage.

And upload today’s Teaser video to YouTube.

The latter — as, I suspect, a result of the former! — is taking its time!

You have to love bandwidth issues, don’t you … ?

~≈👨🏻‍💻≈~

As you know … ?

I’ve had a lot of help, just recently: both in attempting to fix my old iMac.

And in acquiring a new one.

So … ?

I thought I’d show you what I’ve bought with your money.

And let you know I have it hooked up to a 24” Benq monitor over HDMI, two external hard drives*, a blu-ray drive, a webcam and a pair of speakers.

With the drives, webcam and speakers hooked up via a couple of hubs.

I hope that’s interesting: and suggests possible set-ups for others.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga†, Mum‡ and Debbi§ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on three.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        Which country adopted the Euro in January, 2023: Albania, Bulgaria or Croatia?

Q2)        February of 2023 saw the EU parliament vote in favour of banning the sale of what: petrol-powered vehicles, coal mining or nuclear powered submarines?

Q3)        March saw the death of Paul O’Grady.   He will be best remembered as which drag character?

Q4)        What did Germany phase out, in April of 2023: nuclear power, petrol cars or a state broadcaster?

Q5)        Who’s UK coronation took place in May of this year: Charles 1st’s, Charles 2nd’s or Charles 3rd’s?

Q6)        The Titan submersible imploded in June, 2023. What had it been exploring: the Mariana Trench, the wreck of the Titanic or the Great Barrier Reef?

Q7)        The SAG-AFTRA union announced a strike in July of this year.   The union represents whom: actors, writers or cheese mongers?

Q8)        FIFA’s Women’s World Cup Final was held in August of 2023.   Who won?

Q9)        September saw a well known English comedian accursed of sexual misconduct.   Which comedian: Russell Brand, Jason Manford or Sean Lock?

Q10)        Microsoft finally bought Activision in October.   After approval from regulators, where: the UK, EU or Russia?

Q11)        Which band released a song called “Now and Then”, in November of this year: the Beatles, the Ramones or the Rolling Stones?

Q12)        Finally … ? And at the time of writing (November)?   Who had announced planned strikes for December of 2023: train drivers, nurses or civil servants?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        30th December is the feast day of Saint Edwin of Evesham.   The Evesham in question is where: Worcestershire, Kent or Cornwall?
A1)        Worcestershire.   You can read about the saint, here

Q2)        30th December is the fifth day of what: Christmas, Kwanzaa or Vesak?
A2)        Kwanzaa.

Q3)        For some forms of Christianity, 30th December is the sixth day of what: Christmas, Kwanzaa or Vesak?
A3)        Christmas.

Q4)        30th December saw coal-mine canaries in the UK made redundant.   30th December of which year?
A4)        1986.

Q5)        Finally … ?   The Gadsden Purchase treaty was drafted, on 30th December, 1853.   The treaty allowed the US government to buy land from Mexico.   In order to build what: forts, railways or new towns?
A5)        Railways: or railroads, if you want to put it like that.

Here’s a thought …
“I am not hopeless nor have I lost my motivation. We cannot stop trying. I still hope and deeply believe that the tireless efforts of our civil society activists will eventually bear fruit.” Narges Mohammadi, who won the 2023 Nobel Prize for Peace.
There’s music from Buch Bacharach, who died this year …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        One thing the Crashed iMac situation has taught me?   Is that the old 3-2-1 Back-up rule makes sense.   It’s relatively simple.   You’re supposed to keep three backups: at least two on different media, and one of which is offsite.   I have stuff back-up to one external drive, with Time Machine, and other stuff stored in the cloud … but still need an extra drive — tape drive, hard drive, solid state drive — of some description.

I’m tempted to ask if your ears have been updated, Olga!   Sorry!   At any rate: I asked about it because it sounds very quiet to me.   And I couldn’t increase the volume of the audio track in iMovie: as Debbi notice, the music was louder than my voice.   I MAY have to see if I can tweak it with other software.

        Hello, Mum!

§        I can imagine jobs could be awkward, Debbi: unless you know about grape-picking or wine making.   That can be a bit specialised, from what I know.   (Sommeliers, wine specialists in hotels and restaurants?   Tend to be very knowledgeable: good ones can earn a good living!)
The reason I asked about the video, Debbi: is that it didn’t seem to loud to me.   What’s more, I couldn’t turn up the audio portion on it in iMovie: but could on the music.   That’s why there’s a noticeable difference!

  1. I would like to wish you and your regular quizera a Happy and Prosperous New Year for 2024. Seems only yesterday I was working hard on Y2K and making a fortune on supporting systems on Jan 1st 2000.

I see. Good luck with sorting the voice mystery. And have a good New Year's Eve and lets hope 2024 brings us some good news, because the last few years have all been pretty trying, one way or another. All the best to all the readers and followers of the teaser and to your family as well, Paul.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
