Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 17th October 2024.

17th October, 2024.

Pop star, Liam Payne*, has died.

The former One Direction star was on holiday in Argentina: falling from a third floor hotel room, after — it seems — getting drunk.

There’s possibly half a ton of stuff to say, there.

But?

The thing that surprises me, isn’t the fans mourning.

I can understand that.

What always surprises me?

Is the hero worship shown.

Humanity does seem to like bending at the knee.

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum†, OlgaDebbi§ putting in their answers: with Olga and Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        17th October is the UN sponsored International Day for the Eradication of what?

Q2)        Cambodia became independent from France on 9th November: after a handover agreement on 17th October.   In which year of the 1950s?

Q3)        17th October, 1948, saw the birth of Margot Kidder.   She played Kathy Lutz: in which 1979 horror film: Alien, The Amityville Horror or Phantasm?

Q4)        Arthur Miller was born on 17th October, 1915.   The character of Willy Loman appeared in which of Miller’s plays: A View from the Bridge, The Crucible or Death of a Salesman?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Rita Hayworth was born on 17th October, 1918.   A poster of her features in which Stephen King derived film: Carrie, Christine or The Shawshank Redemption?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        16th October is World Food Day.   According to whom: the United Nations, European Union or African League?
A1)        The United Nations, or UN.

Q2)        It commemorates the founding of what: the World Food Programme, the Food and Agriculture Organisation or the International Fund for Agricultural Development?
A2)        The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation.

Q3)        Woks are used to cook food.   Where are woks from: Italy, China or France?
A3)        China.

Q4)        Chip pans are used for what: deep frying, baking or boiling?
A4)        Deep frying.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Bees pollinate food crops: and produce what ‘H’ as a result?
A5)        Honey.
Here’s a thought …
“The way out, as the poet says, is always through.”
Arthur Miller, October 17, 1915 – February 10, 2005.
A song …

And an earworm …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Unfortunately?   Payne’s name sounds a lot like the name of fictional executioner, Ilyn Payne.   I’ve got images of Wilko Johnson …

        Hello, Mum!

It’s times like this I wish we had some sort of official ID, Olga: an easy to use one, at least.   I suspect paying for it — for those of us in my shoes — is going to cause issues.   Passports cost ~£90, just as an example: and my provisional driving license was ~£45.   And I had help with the driving license.
Oh, a job scam!   It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of those!   The last one I got was from a company who wanted me to work from home: and offering to buy me a very expensive MacBook Pro, and a satellite phone.   I turned them down, obviously: no company I know is going to buy me a MacBook: when they can get half a dozen cheap Chromebooks for the same price.
You’re right: the idea’s sound.   But the practical details … ?   Well …

§        The trick with chips, Debbi, from what I recall?   Is to parboil them for a short time, before you fry them.   You get a nicer surface, that way.   (I haven’t made fried chips for years: it’s a touch healthier if you air fry them!)

I was checking, and here the ID document we use costs 12 € at the moment, although they don't charge you if you just need to change the data in it. You have to go in person to get it done.

  3. We don't eat a lot of deep-fried food either.

Now and then, we might indulge a bit, but in moderation.

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
