“Prison sources have confirmed to BBC News that staff led him away and towards the train station. Kebatu also reportedly attempted to return to prison but was turned away.”
He’d been “… filmed in Chelmsford speaking to members of the public shortly after he was released, and police have confirmed he has approached several people seeking assistance.”
And a senior police officer has said he “… had already indicated a desire to return to Ethiopia when speaking to immigration staff.”
I actually feel vaguely sympathetic to the man.
It sounds like he’s OK about being deported, and tried to get help from staff in getting to where he’s supposed to be going …
And been refused the help he should be getting.
If I’ve understood things correctly, prisoners are supposed to be shipped between prisons — or prisons and detention sites — by van: or be escorted on public transport, by a qualified staff member.
I don’t know about you … but I don’t think this is an escape attempt.
I think it’s a monumental cock-up by the prison staff.

As an update?
Radio 4’s Broadcasting House programme has announced that the migrant who went missing on Friday, and that I’ve been discussing … has now been arrested in East Finchley.
My point still stands, though: his release was a massive mistake by prison staff: not by anyone else.

Decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* Hello, Mum!
† That’s very true, Debbi! About the one thing that’s re-assuring? Is that the chap’s been re-arrested in London. Hopefully, he won’t get sent back to Chelmsford Prison: they’ve made a hash of his case.
Oh, I did see the story about Grafton: a few months ago. It … well … it sounds like it’s being run by ex-prison officers. From Chelmsford …
Oh, do you remember Nabil Shaban? Who played Sil, during the Colin Baker years? Turns out he died, a few days ago. He’ll be missed: Sil was one of the villains.
‡ Peret sounds like a very wise man, Olga! Although it sounds like he’s been joined by the Clangers on that song!
I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you get everything done … !
Q5) Microsoft Yes, I thought about the Klangers as well! I did manage to get everything done, but it was handy to have an extra hour yesterday night... A few more here and there would be handy. I hope the revision comes at a convenient date, Paul.
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
