Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 9th May 2026

9th May, 2026.

Right … I’m worried … !

That I’m starting to look like a chunky version of Raymond Reddington: the James Spader character in The Blacklist.

I wouldn’t mind: except I’ve never actually watched it: just the clips YouTube keeps throwing at me!

Whether I do or I don’t … ?

The show does look interesting …

Algorithms … algorithms, though …

Algorithms are all over the place: and are usually serving up adverts.

Or, their serving me adverts.

One repeated ad?

Was for an unnamed brand of external flash drive, a 16 terabyte drive, for “the price of a chocolate bar”.

Around a pound, in other words: even though the advert didn’t give a price anymore specific than that.

I was both sceptical: and laughing my head off.

Because?

Some six years ago, I got conned by a third-party seller on Ebay — calling itself fashionjiacl* — a seller that was selling two terabyte USB stick for a very attractive price.

Sticks that turned out hold no more than thirty-two gigabytes.

I got my money back from them: and swore to be more careful.

And — when I saw this question on Quora — was happy to share my experience.

So, seeing these ads for incredibly cheap, sixteen terabyte sticks?

Ads that tell me that people are still falling for this scam?

Leaves me laughing, leaves me sceptical, leaves me saddened …

And leaves me wanting to mention the scam when I can …

Let’s move on.

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with Debbi scoring five out of five, and Mum on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        New Parliament House opened on 9th May, 1988.   It’s in which Australian city?

Q2)        Twenty-six miners were killed in the Westray Mine Disaster: on 9th May, 1992.   The disaster took place in which country: the USA, Canada or Brazil?

Q3)        The May 9th Riots started on 9th May, 2023: after the arrest of Imran Khan.   In which country: Bangladesh, India or Pakistan?

Q4)        Trinidadian cricketer, Jackie Grant, was born on 9th May, 1907.   He played test cricket for which international side: Australia, the West Indies or England?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Beth Mead was born on 9th May, 1995.   She plays football for which WSL side: Arsenal, Fulham or Liverpool?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Coca Cola was introduced on 8th May: by John Stith Pemberton.   8th May of which year: 1888, 1886 or 1884?
A1)        1886.

Q2)        The drink includes a lot of carbonated … what?
A2)        Water.

Q3)        1935 saw Coca Cola being certified as what: kosher, halal or ital … ?
A3)        Kosher.   (The Wikipedia entry tells us that some Ashkenazi Jews don’t accept it as kosher during Passover.   I have a mental image of Modi Rosenberg!)

Q4)        Pemberton’s original recipe included a quart of what: alcohol, sulphuric acid or petrol?
A4)        Alcohol.

Q5)        Finally … ?   Pemberton’s original recipe included what, as a colouring agent: caramel, cochineal or pomegranate rind?
A5)        Caramel.
Here’s a thought …
“I’m 5' 7", but my mom is 6 feet tall.   In my family, I’m short.”
Rosario Dawson, born May 9, 1979.
And a Billy Joel song …

The next ten question sets will be on the 17th, 26th and 31st May, and on 3rd June: they’re about Dennis Potter, Miles Davis, Trinity Sunday and Liverpool football club.

Your comments, and today’s answers, will be published in tomorrow’s Teaser.

AI is avoided when writing these questions.

Answers are as accurate as possible: at the time of writing.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        The seller, fashionjiacl, is ‘no longer a registered user’ of Ebay.   I wonder why …

Hello, Mum!   (It used alcohol, Mum, rather than sulphuric acid!)

I think we’re stuck with the Lib-dems in Brentwood West, Debbi: and I don’t think we’ve any left-leaning councillors.   The Greens and Labour clocked some thirteen percent of the vote, between them.   You can see the results, here: https://brentwood.moderngov.co.uk/mgElectionResults.aspx?ID=14&RPID=62088486

  2. Oh, dear. I looked up the Reform Party. Sounds like you've got your own set of ... extremists? Extreme conservatives?

    What a world, huh?

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
