The Daily Teaser — 12-10-2011

Hmmm …

You know, I’m like a lot of people I know: I tend to have the news on, if nothing else is catching my eye.

There’s actually a couple of bits that have floated across my attention, this morning.

Three, actually. Although the news that the coalition government’s new Work Academies — designed to help unemployed people like me find a job — are soon to open, isn’t seemingly on their website, yet.

The other two bits … ? Well, for starters, it seems Defence minister, Dr Liam Fox, has had more trouble piled on his doorstep!

Oh …
And Blackberry users are complaining once more, after ANOTHER server crash has left them unable to access the various smart services on their phones.

Steve Jobs is probably smiling about that!

Lets get moving on, shall we … ?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Debbi — all on her ownsome as Nina’s having cabling problems — putting in her answers: and, along with bagging 5 out of 5, ALSO managed to correct one of my answers. Or, at least, managed to introduce information I never thought to look at.

Lets see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we? Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video

Q1) 12th October, 1978, saw Sex Pistols bassist, Sid Vicious, arrested for the murder of his girlfriend: what was her name … ?

Q2) More to the point, in which part of New York was this … ?

Q3) 12th October, 1492, saw Christopher Columbus which the Bahamas, believing he’d reached where: South Asia, East Asia or Central Asia?

Q4) 12th October, 1928, saw the first use of which respirator?

Q5) 12th October, 1979, saw the publication of the first novel in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Series: what’s the name of the main human character … ?

Q6) And finally … 12th September, 1915, saw the execution of Edith Cavell, by German firing squad: after she’d helped Allied troops escape which country?
And here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 11th October, 1982, saw the raising of the Mary Rose: in which year did the Mary Rose sink … ?
A1) 1545.

Q2) More to the point: whose flagship was the Mary Rose?
A2) Henry 8th.

Q3) 11th October, 1976, saw the arrest of the the Gang of Four, in China: name any one of them …
A3) Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan and Wang Hongwen.

Q4) 11th October, 1976, saw whom named — posthumously — as General of the Armies of the United States?
A4) President George Washington.

Q5) And finally … 11th October, 2002, saw a bomb attack on which Finnish city … ?
A5) Vantaa.
Debbi’s answer for Q2, as a point, was Sir Edward Howard: I’m letting her have the point for that, as he was the vice admiral who chose the Mary Rose as the flagship for the War of the League of Cambrai.*

Either way … ? Enjoy those: I’ll catch you later …

* Is it me, or are recovering lawyers rather better than most at research … ?

1 comment:

  1. Lawyers are fairly well trained in research. And it doesn't hurt that I also have a degree in library science, which required even more research training. Whew! :)

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
