Q3)In either case, where was it the flag of: the UK, USA, USSR or Great Britain?
A3)Great Britain: the then name of the two kingdoms. (The country only became the UK, in 1801.)
Q4)When the flag was used on ships, it would have been described as a Naval what?
A4)Ensign. (Naval ensigns are used on the main mast.)
Q5)Finally … the flag usually gets called the Union Jack. In other words, it’s meant to be flown on the back or front of a ship?
A5)The front, or bow. (It’s flown from what’s called the Jackstaff: the flagpole on the front of the ship.)
Here’s a thought …
“Everyone knows what the Masters is, even if you’re a non-golfer. People know what Wimbledon is. They know what the Super Bowl is. There are certain events that people just know about.”
Tiger Woods.
And a tune …
Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.
Have a good day … !
* Sorry about the score, Olga: but it’s a naval ensign — a junior officer AND a flag! — and Great Britain. The country didn’t become the UK, until 1707! It all ties in with when we became a joint kingdom, the latter, rather than two countries with the same monarch, the former. Boy, but those timings are killers, when you write a pub quiz! Moving on … ? I’m just glad Anna, the older of my two younger sisters, has stuck with Apple: it makes helping transfer her details a lot easier. I know I’ve always managed to avoid both malicious software … and buying Office: last time I looked the Mac version was £180, and the Windows version, £120. Either are too expensive for what I need. (I use the Apple iWorks suite, which handles my word processing and power point needs quite well: and cost £30 at the time. Go figure.)
‡ Might have to keep an eye open for it, Debbi: it sounds interesting. I have to admit, the dad sounds very much in the traditions of Frank Gallagher from Shameless, or Alf Garnett from ’Til Death Do Us Part. Turns out Alf was the basis for Archie Bunker … and Eric Cartman in South Park. (A stitch? Now, there’s American and British English going off at tangents, again … !)
Q1) Augusta National Golf Course Q2) USA Q3) 1997 Q4) 2005 Q5) Green Q6) Jack Nicklaus Q7) Palmer Q8) Danny Willett Q9) U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship Q10) Danny Willett (this year it’s been a Spaniard, Sergio García. Honestly, I told you I couldn't make head or tail or anything yesterday. I think it was the pictures of the flag and which way was up or down (The Great Britain one I got right and then re-read the question and thought it referred to now rather than at the time...). I think your hard drive felt threatened and decided to clean up its act, but it's unlikely to work long-term. Take care!
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.

Heh! :) Speaking of which, is "poofter" still a perjorative term for gay man in England?
ReplyDeleteJust wondering, since fag means cigarette. Talk about confusing! :)
