Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 5th April, 2015

5th April, 2018.

I’m assuming you watch the news?   Is that right?

I’m also assuming — if you do — you’d be glued to one of two news in the UK: either the BBC’s news channel, or to Sky News.

Personally, I prefer the BBC’s channel: there’s no adverts.   Apart from things like tonight’s fantastic episode of whatever!

I also tend to prefer BBC Radio 4, first thing in the morning.   Again, no adverts … and a general unbiasedness.

At ANY rate?  Recently, Aunty Beeb’s reported on a slew of knife and gun crime in London.

I’m not actually complaining about that.

The crime, that is: there’s little I can do to stop it.   Putting a few pence into a crime prevention charity’s pot — as and when the tin comes rattling around — could help.   But complaining would little.

So that’s not my issue, this morning.

No …

We’re getting these reports from London.

How much crime are we getting, elsewhere?

I think the BBC’s being a little remiss, here.

It’s JUST reporting violent crime in London.

Not from the rest of the UK.

Let’s move on?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga* and Debbi† putting in their answers: with Olga scoring five out of five, and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) John Rolfe got married: on 5th April, 1614.   To whom?
Q2) The War of the Pacific started on 5th April, 1879: when Chile declared war on two neighbouring nations.   Name either one of the two.   (We just need one: not both.)
Q3) The Heavyweight champion of the world, Jack Johnson, lost the title to Jess Willard: on 5th April of which year?
Q4) During the American Civil War, 5th April, 1862, saw the start of The battle of where: Yorktown, Birmingham or New York?
Q5) Finally … 5th April, 1900, saw the birth of Spencer Tracey.   Which 1937 film bagged him a Best Actor Oscar?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 4th April saw Philip Astley stage what’s now considered the modern day circus.   In which year?
A1) 1768.
Q2) One of Astley’s earliest circuses was Astley’s Amphitheatre.   Amphitheatres were used by the ancient whom: Egyptians, Romans or Celts?
A2) Romans.
Q3) That Circus — as many succeeding ones — featured a forty-two foot what?
A3) Ring.
Q4) The first American Circus was opened by John Ricketts, in 1792: in which city?
Q5) Finally … equestrian, Pablo Fanque, made his debut at Astley’s.   He gets a mention in which Beatles tune?
Here’s a thought …
“Look, the only thing an actor has to offer a director and finally an audience is his instinct. That’s all.”
Spencer Tracey, April 5, 1900 – June 10, 1967.
As it’s Stan Ridgeway’s birthday?   A song‡ …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        You watch, Olga: you’ll get back to Barcelona, only to be followed by the TV license people!   They ARE persistent … !   I’m ALSO going to admit to a certain amount of curiosity: how ARE you going to manage to access all the UK TV shows you’d be messing.   (What with Brexit?   I think the TV passport thing will change …)

†        It DOES seem to be human nature, Debbi, doesn’t it … ?

‡        Why stop at one song about pirate radio?

Well, there is a fair bit of British TV there and I'm thinking about keeping up Amazon Prime or something else, so we shall see. By the way, they told me they had cancelled the account, so when I sent the guy a thank you, I got another automated message telling me I would get a reply in 3 working days! Oh, the joy!
Ah, and just to let you know the money has gone through and I'm just waiting for the buyers to come and pick up the keys. Almost there!

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
