Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-10-2019: Sir Christopher Wren.

30th October, 2019.

I’m sorry, I’m going to get a touch political, if you don’t mind.

We now have an election date: 12th December, this year.

I may — if I’m feeling up for it — do a relevant Teaser about it.

That … ?

That’s going to be interesting, I think.

Especially given the weather …

At any rate?   I’m planning — assuming they’re standing — on voting Green …

Or spoiling my vote, if not.

Oh, just as a quick extra point …  ?

I mentioned the debate around the idea of voter ID, recently: and mentioned this petition*.

It hasn’t reached the required number of signatures to get debated in Parliament.   Including twenty-two in my home town.

It has had a response, though.

Mostly in favour of introducing ID.

The deadline for it?   Is in April, next year.

Here’s hoping it gets the signatures.

Oh, and just as a final point?

Apparently, content creators — TV and movie producers, in other words — are complaining.

Because Netflix has introduce a new feature.

Yes: Netflix have introduced a fast forward button.

Something QuickTime, VLC, and god knows how many other media players, along side DVD players, Blu-ray players and VHS machines, have had for years.

Ye gods!
“Night City was like a deranged experiment in social Darwinism, designed by a bored researcher who kept one thumb permanently on the fast-forward button.”
Neuromancer, William Gibson.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga†, Badwolf‡, and Debbi^ putting in their answers: with Anne and Olga scoring five out of five, and Debbi on four.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video …

Q1) Christopher Wren was born on 30th October of which year?
Q2) After the Great Fire of London, Wren’s said to have built how many London Churches: 51, 52 or 53?
Q3) Which cathedral is the best known of those churches?
Q4) Wren’s credited with what’s now the Royal Naval College in Greenwich.   What was it, when Wren designed it: a hospital, an army base or a cheese factory?
Q5) Finally … ?   Wren was a founding member of what: Jesus College Cambridge, the Royal Society or the Académie française?
Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1) 29th October, 2015, saw Chinese newspapers announce China would be abolishing what?
Q2) The Abolition went into effect in which year?
A2) 2016.
Q3) 29th October 1945, saw the birth of singer and actress, Melba Moore.   In which film did she play Bessie Cooley?
Q4) 29th October, 1947, saw the birth of actor, Richard Dreyfuss.   He played Roy Neary in which film?
Q5) Finally … ?   29th October is the feast day of Bishop and Martyr, James Hannington.   He’s a martyr according to which church: the Roman Catholic Church, the Greek Orthodox Church, or the Anglican Communion?
Here’s a thought …
“A time will come when men will stretch out their eyes. They should see planets like our Earth.”
Sir Christopher Wren.
And a songª …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Have a good day.

*        Petitions on the official .gov site are a way for people to express themselves on a given issue.   If those petitions get 100, 000 votes, they have to be debated in Parliament.

†        I think I’m going to need it, Olga!   (Sorry about the politics, by the way: but at least we have an election date.)

‡        What CAN I tell you, Anne?   Apart from the fact Apple’s changed how dragging and dropping web links works!   Technology … !   Oh, nice to see the blog thing taking shape: good luck with that …

^        That’s definitely a thought, Debbi!   I keep thinking I should watch Creature from the Black Lagoon, so you know: I’m getting requests, though …!   (Oh … about that quote from Sir Christopher … )

ª        The Wren Hall, where the singers were performing?   Was designed by Sir Christopher.

  2. Sorry, Paul, but I won't be able to join today. I've managed to schedule too many things for the same day. I'll catch up tomorrow (hopefully!)

I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?

I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.

Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.

Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.

Thank you.
