Q3) Bass Reeves died on 12th January, 1910. He was one of the USA’s first African American what: US Marshals, judges or bounty hunters?
A3) USMarshals. (The Encyclopedia Britannica tells us he was a deputy Marshal: which the Wikipedia entry tells us is the basic rank of the front-line agent.)
Q4) The Taal Volcano erupted: on 12th January, 2020. Where is that volcano: the Bahamas, Micronesia or the Philippines?
The quizmaster’s decisions about scores are final.
Thank you for coming: have a good day.
* Well … I did get to hear from the Medical assessment people, Olga: they’ve finally set a date. So that’s something.
And, yes: Jane Eyre always sounds like a job and a half! I think to stop and think about the word ‘moor,’ there, I know that. It’s an area of open country … but I automatically though of one of the other definition: that of a person of North African descent. There’s a village near me called Blackmore: I always assumed the place had been named during the Crusades, and had a North African resident of some sort. Except the Wikipedia entry tells me it’s a corruption of Black marsh/swamp. Oh, well … !
† Hello, Mum!
‡ He’d probably love Dave Allen, Debbi. I’ve JUST tweeted the video to him, so you know.
Q5) Washington DC Well, fingers crossed she does well in her exam today. She didn't have a very good day yesterday. She is having a lot of exams and was quite tired, but the revision of the book didn't go that badly. Having lived in Yorkshire for quite a few years (and having visited Haworth quite a few times) I know what the moors look like, although I can't remember what I thought they might be like before I moved to England. That part of the country looks pretty similar to the rural area where my Dad comes from (Galicia, in the North West of Spain, but he is from a hilly area, rather than anywhere close to the cost, in Orense). It is fascinating to learn where the names of places come from. (Here many people still call northern Africans "moros", although these days I tend to think of Othello).
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
