A5)Football. (I can remember the first time I mentioned them in a quiz. I had fifteen people telling me, very loudly, how to correctly pronounce the name! It’s — if I’ve got it right! — pronounced ‘eye-YAKS’.)
Here’s a thought …
“The life of the super-rich is not one to be envied, whizzing round in those horrid little jet planes all the time.”
* Oh, LORD, but a PA would come in handy, Olga! There’s been times I could’ve done with one!
And Señor García-Berlanga sounds a little like John Landis, as well as Hitchcock. Landis always tried to throw the phrase, “See you next Wednesday”, into his films. Wikipedia tells us Landis lifted it from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I got told — many years ago — that it was a reference to a Popeye character called Wimpy.
Wimpy would always ask others for money for a hamburger: and promise to pay it back on Tuesday …
† Hello, Mum! (The phrase is used about a lot of places, Mum.)
‡ ‘Pooh’ is one way of putting it, Debbi!
Actually, do you mind a confession, Debbi? I can never hear the word ‘rat’, without thinking of Slippery Jim DiGriz … !
§ So they were trying to keep the place looking medieval, Trevor? That’s possibly an excuse for AI generated art …
Q5) Bo Peep Yes, it sounds as if Berlanga and Landis had that in common. I remembered the Popeye character but not the name, and I had to check. Here they called him Pilón. I have no idea why, although sometimes the cartoons were dubbed into Spanish elsewhere, so it might have a different meaning in other Spanish-speaking countries. (It seems that in Mexico is something extra they give you when you go shopping if you buy a lot... Here it is normally a stone with a hole on it where they put water, so not much to do with the name). Of course, Wimpy's didn't exist here then (or now, for that matter), so the original name doesn't mean much either.
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
