Q1)12th November is the feast day of Saint Nilus of Sinai. The modern Sinai peninsula is in which North African country?
Q2)It’s the only part of the country that’s where: Africa, Asia or North America?
Q3)Plymouth became a borough on 12th November. When: 1439, 1441 or 1443?
Q4)In a flyby on 12th November, 1980, the Voyager 1 craft took photos of the rings of where: Saturn, Jupiter or Uranus?
Q5)Finally … ? Anne Hathaway was born: on 12th November, 1982. She played Josephine Chesterfield in which 2019 film: Serenity, The Hustle or Dark Waters?
Q1)11th November is Armistice Day: marking the end of World War One. An armistice can also be called a cease … what?
A1)A cease-fire. I get the impression, though, that they’re two different things. The relevant Wikipedia articles tell us an Armistice is a formal agreement to cease hostilities, but a cease-fire can be formal or informal. An armistice is also NOT a peace treaty: the one that ended WW1 was signed in 1919. (Anyone know what a humanitarian pause is?)
Q2)11th November is the feast day of Menas of Egypt. Menas is the patron saint of Heraklion. Heraklion is on which Greek island?
Q3)Demi Moore was born on 11th November, 1962. She played Molly Jensen in 1990’s highest grossing film. What is that film: Pretty Woman, Home Alone or Ghost?
† You know, I’ve never seen Ghost, Olga? That’s possibly a good thing: although I know Whoopi Goldberg got a Best Supporting gong for it.
Hmmm … I think ‘asses’ depends on who you talk to§: a lot of older people hell will using the British English term, I think!
‡ Pointless trivia for you, Debbi¶: that’s Richard O’Brian’s mouth in the sequence …
It was a good LP, wasn’t it? It’s just a shame they didn’t do much else: beyond a single called Christiana Obey.
§ As I recall, Olga? Radio 4 did a version of Don Quixote, many years ago. From the clips I’ve heard? The continuity announcer closed one episode with “We leave Don Quixote, sitting on his ass … … ”.
The British English pronunciation of ‘Don Quixote’ probably didn’t help …
¶ It’s only a Republica video when Saffron starts pogoing, Debbi!
Q5) The Hustle We use "burro" for donkey, but "asno" is also quite common, which I think is the closest to ass in that sense (we would use "culo" usually, for the other sense, although there are many other options, as you can probably imagine, "posaderas" being a bit less direct.) A horse wouldn't normally be an "asno" unless he was particularly useless and bad-behaved, although Rocinante, Don Quijote's horse is no pure breed, by any stretch of the imagination, so... Perhaps not such a bad translation.
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.
