As you know, my iMac — the machine that formed the technological backbone of both this blog, and my YouTube channel — rolled over and died, a few days ago.
And, thanks to the generosity of friends, family, and readers, I was able to fund repairs.
In theory.
Had the thing been fixable? Fixing would’ve happened.
And insurance, extra storage, and extra cloud storage, would’ve happened.
It wasn’t.
Neither did the planned extras.
But?
Thanks to the generosity of many, I was able to fund buying a base-model, Mac mini.
One I was initially told would be delivered, tomorrow.
But eventually arrived, yesterday.
I am grateful for that.
As it only took an hour or so for me to;
Set up.
Sync most of my bookmarks and passwords.
Find and sync my Photo and media library.
Download and install operating system updates.
Download and install newer versions of software.
I’m grateful.
To everyone that’s helped, and that the process went well.
Attached to a Benq monitor, the Apple mouse and keyboard from my iMac, an external blu-ray drive, and both my media storage and Time Machine external hard drives.
Things I’ve owned for a while.
It’s not the most powerful machine in Apple’s current line-up* but — thus far — it seems to be working well: at least for my basic needs.
Handbrake, iMovie, and the various media/productivity apps, are working well.
* That’ll be the 2023 Mac Pro tower! To paraphrase The Silence of the Lambs? “Oh, it’s a monster … !”
† “Give it a Go”? Can I groan now, Olga, or should I wait until later?
On a more serious note? It’s been relatively glitchy free: bar the odd problem with some use of the system alerts. They’re using the olde (female) system voice, rather than the new, male one. I suspect most of those will just need reinstalling! (Oh, there’s a good version of Pac-man that’s only available for Macs with these processors! Hmmm … )
I suspect the US government’s site possibly not open source, Olga: but are trying to encourage taking part!
‡ Hello, Mum!
§ It was the theme to Rocky 3, Debbi: that was Mr T’s cinematic debut. (Lord knows what he’s doing these days!)
I’ll tell you what, Debbi, I’m looking forward to the speakers turning up: the new mini’s speakers aren’t quite as powerful as the old iMacs! But it’s nice to be able to use the right keyboard shortcuts!
Q5) Budapest Good on the setting up. I saw it mentioned that the new mini-Mac might have the new M3 processor. It seems that would be quite a new move on their part, as they don't tend to include the new processor on the minis until they've been out and about in other machines for quite a while, but I'm only going by what I read. (No idea). No, I wasn't referring to the actual web of the USA government, but of the Design System. Basically, that is a collection of resources they use in their webs, Apps and designs, like the kind of typography, their buttons, etc. Apple's is also free to use, and so is Microsoft and quite a few others. Here is the one for the US government, if you want to check what I mean (basically useful for developers and designers who work on that kind of thing, using things like Figma or Adobe Photoshop). https://designsystem.digital.gov/ Oh, this is the one for Apple: https://developer.apple.com/design/ And this the one for Google, that is pretty good, and as the course I'm doing is a Google course, they talk about it, Material Design, quite often. https://m3.material.io/
I love it when someone comments. But, having had anonymous comments I feel may be libellous, actionable or just plain offensive, over the years?
I’d appreciate you* leaving your name — with a link to your website or social-media profile†, for preference — before you post a comment.
Should you choose to use a pseudonym/name, I’d appreciate it if that name were to be polite and inoffensive. I’d rather you kept it clean, and relatively grown up. Comments left with a pseudonym will be posted at my discretion: I really prefer a link.
Contentious, actionable or abusive posts left anonymously will not be posted. Nor will comments using offensive pseudonyms or language, or that are abusive of other commenters.
Thank you.
* I know many value their online privacy. I respect that. But hope you respect my wish to see who’s commenting on my blog: and my wish for you to introduce your self to me, and to your fellow commentors.

I know. I even saw the movie when it first came out. Very old, I am. Now, I write like Yoda talks. :)
