Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 29-12-2023 — Mongolia.

29th December, 2023: Mongolia.

Oh …

I’ve found a feature!

You’ve possibly worked out I’ve got a new Mac mini: the base line model.

Frankly?

I’m grateful for it, and to everyone whose helped me buy it.

Whilst I’m aware of its limitations?

I’m also aware it’s running macOS Sonoma: with all the subtle differences from its predecessor, Ventura, the OS I’m more familiar with, that that implies.

So, I’m getting used to things, still.

I do know I managed to record some footage for the video versions of upcoming Teasers: and noticed that there was an extra icon in the Menu Bar, when I had QuickTime set to record.

Of a camera.

It turns out the icon has a group of dropdown settings, for recording with QuickTime: including what it calls a ‘Voice Isolation’ mode.

A hum reduction setting, in other words.

I don’t know how much use it will be: nor how well it would show up.

But it certainly could be useful.

Let’s move on, shall we?

Yesterday’s Teaser saw Olga*, Mum† and Debbi‡ putting in their answers: with everyone scoring five out of five.

Let’s see how everyone does with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the How To, License and video.

Q1)        29th December is Independence Day in Mongolia.   It marks the country’s independence from where: Imperial China, the USSR. Or the USA?

Q2)        What’s Mongolia’s capital: Ulaanbaatar, Beijing or Hanoi?

Q3)        The country is a what: a semi presidential republic, an absolute monarchy or a theocratic junta?

Q4)        What’s Mongolia’s official language?

Q5)        Finally … ?   Mongolia was once called Outer Mongolia. Where’s Inner Mongolia?

Here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …

Q1)        Wilhelm Rontgen announced he’d discovered x-rays.   In a paper published on 28th December of which year: 1895, 1897 or 1899?
A1)        1895.

Q2)        Adelaide was founded on 28th December, 1836.   Where: Tasmania, South Australia or New South Wales?
A2)        South Australia.

Q3)        Noomi Rapace was born on 28th December, 1979.   She played Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon what?
A3)        The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Q4)        F. W. Murnau was born on 28th December, 1888.   He was a well known director, born where: France, Germany or Sweden?
A4)        Germany.

Q5)        Finally … ?   28th December, 1903, saw the birth of computer scientist, John von Neumann.   Where: Budapest, Berlin or Birmingham?
A5)        Budapest.

Here’s a thought …
“Mongolia is a symbol of religious freedom.”
Pope Francis.
And a song …

Today’s questions will be answered in tomorrow’s Teaser.

Decisions about scores are final.

Thank you for coming: have a good day.

*        Oh, those design elements, Olga!   Gotcha!   Yeah, handing those out for free, would make sense.   Some of the courses can be quite pricey: so giving away resources would make sense.
I think I’ve got the voice sorted out: it seems there’s more than one setting that changes the system voice!   I wish Apple would re-introduce the older Preferences panel: that was a lot more efficient!
Either way: yes, an M3§ chip would be nice.   But those are limited to just a couple of models, the new — and pricey — iMac and MacBook Pro.   I wouldn’t mind one of those: but I think I’d need to win the lottery to get them!

        Hello, Mum!

        I’m saying nothing, Debbi!   🤣

§        It seems, Olga that the M3 is the only current Apple chip to support the AV1 video codec.   That could cause me issues, later, but we’ll have to see.

Q3) a semi presidential republic

Q4) Mongolian

Q5) China
Yes, I read they might be launching a mini with M3 some time in 2024, so it might not be that long to go. The idea with newer versions and settings is that they should be more user friendly, but that doesn't seem to be always the case. I can tell you that the new settings on Wordpress don't have many fans, but they keep on making changes regardless. The issue might well be that we follow people with similar outlook and experiences (at a certain level at least), and we don't read or see the people they ask and who are very keen on the changes. On the other hand, it might also be that they implement changes because they are to be seen as doing something...
I'm sure you'll find settings you like. It's a matter of trial and error.
