29th January, 2026.

It’s Sunday.

And I’ve got Radio 4’s Witness History playing very quietly in the background.

All about the first time someone broke the sound barrier.

Which is nice.

Equally as nice?

Was the Sunday Service: which seemed appropriate, as the first woman to be named as Archbishop of Canterbury was installed this week.

What IS a pain, however minor?

Is simply the fact the clocks went forward, overnight.

So, one, Britain’s now on British Summer Time.

Two, I’ve had to put two clocks, the two that don’t change automatically, forward.

And three … ?

I feel as out of sorts as I always do, when the clocks change.

Calling the whole thing a faff, seems mild …

Did I mention my nephew, Jude, was over, last night?

My nephew, Jude, was over, last night.

So … ?

Of course he’s added a video: he and his friends wanted to show how to do horrible things to electronic chickens …

At any rate … ?

We had take away — fish, chicken nuggets, chips — from a chip shop in Brentwood High Street, ordered through Deliveroo.

It took an hour to get here: from a chip shop half a mile away.

I was angry, Jude was hungry, and Ruth — my sister, and Jude’s mother — was distinctly underwhelmed.

So, of course, I’ve put in a complaint.

I don’t know if anything positive will happen, as a result, though.

Partly?

Because I’m not sure I’ve used the complaint system, correctly.

But partly?

Because, I suspect, it’s going to take Deliveroo a while to get things moving.

And … ?

Because I suspect Deliveroo are going to blame the chip shop, who are going to blame the delivery driver … who’s going to blame the traffic … !

I’m … 

Well, I’d like the money back.

But suspect it’s going to take a while.

Right … it’s now Good Friday … !

Yay.

At least ‘Yay’ … in theory.

I went into Romford, yesterday: to try and sell the laptop.

And got nowhere!

Quite what I’m going to do now … ?

I don’t know!

I’ve got to confess, I’m not especially religious: although I’ve found prayer useful, occasionally.

But … ?

I’m also very aware that the US sees religion differently to the UK.

Here, it’s usually seen as a private matter you generally don’t talk about.

Over there, it’s more openly discussed: although I don’t know if Debbi, my one regular comment, can confirm that.

At ANY rate?   Religion in the States seems to be more openly discussed … and more openly involved with politics.

I know I still see the occasional reports of preachers, priests and pastors endorsing one side or another, one policy or another.

Most presidents seem not to want to discuss their particular beliefs: sensibly.

They want to appeal to as many voters as possible: whilst keeping an eye on the US First Amendment, the Constitutional amendment that mandates a separation of church and state.

But … ?

One thing that has come to my attention … ?

Is potential Presidential candidate, Donald Trump … is now selling copies of the Bible.

This, to me, is hugely offensive.

He’s doing this not out of any genuinely held beliefs … but to raise money for his political hopes, to pay off his court costs, and to dupe his Christian voters: to get them to vote for him by convincing them he’s a believer.

The man is a genuine villain: one that’s ignorant of a quote from Dune:

“When religion and politics travel in the same cart, the riders believe nothing can stand in their way.   Their movements become headlong - faster and faster and faster.   They put aside all thoughts of obstacles and forget [that] the precipice does not show itself to the man in a blind rush until it’s too late.”

And equally ignorant of John 2:15-16:

“15        And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables;

16        And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.”

Trump’s about the money: not the beliefs.

I’m expecting a phone call from my GP: to check on how some pain killers are working.

I had my nephew over, yesterday.

You’ll’ve possibly guessed he’s posted a video …

Right … it’s Tuesday … and the day after my most recent blood tests.

I should get the results, and information about a possible change in medication, next week.

Hopefully, things won’t need drastic changes!

I had an old friend get in touch with me, last night.

It was quite good hearing from her.

The shocking bit of the conversation, for me?

Was finding out her ex — who I’d known — had been arrested on some serious charges.

Very serious charges.

I was shocked: but not necessarily surprised.

While I got on with the man — he was pleasant enough to me, when we worked at KFC —, early on, there were warning signs: a borderline iffy age gap, some bad tempered moments.

So finding out what happened?   Like I say, I was shocked, but not surprised.

And, by the sounds of what I’ve been told … ?

His arrest has come at a good time.

Before the pairs daughter was harmed …

With Radio Four’s Today programme blithering on in the background — Martha Carney’s doing her Serious Interview thing — and a game of Mini Metro doing its twinkling ambient music thing?

With all that … I have to admit to feeling just ever so slightly tired!

That’s what happens when you do late night blogging about Disney serials … 

The night before you have to do a phone meeting with your Work and Health Programme!

Just as a final thought?

I’ve got Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven as my current bedtime reading.   Two chapters in?   And I’m amazed at her prose: again.

I’ve mentioned it because mentioning Billy Bragg to Old Peculiar regular, Edith, always gets me thinking of George Orwell.

I’ve got Down and Out in Paris and London as my next bit of bedtime reading.

Yep: it’s day whatever of the Lockdown … and frankly … ?

I’m getting sick of hearing about it!

I know it’s a serious situation, I really do.   I know why we’re having to stay in.

But, lord, isn’t it a grind?

As grouchy as I sound, though?

I do know I’ve a poster up: for a local volunteer group that’s been organised on Facebook, and called  Brentwood COVID-19 Mutual Aid.

There’s a WhatsApp group for each of Brentwood’s wards.

If you’re in my town, and on Facebook, it may be worth joining up: especially as the WhatsApp groups look helpful.

I’ll leave that with you, shall I … ?

You’ve heard the word, ‘earworm,’ haven’t you?   The word refers to one of those songs that — for whatever reason — is persistently banging around your head.

Right at the moment?

I’ve got the Russian entry for this year’s cancelled Eurovision in my head.

It’s a big shame the thing got cancelled: I suspect Little Big’s Uno would’ve won.

The IBS I suffer with usually manages to flare up, rarely, these days.

But this particular incident?

Has been going on since Wednesday.

The joys of being a Temp worker, eh … ?

Yes: I’ve been I’m officially ill, by my supervisor: and should take time off.

Not something I like, to be frank.   As a temp?   I don’t qualify for Statutory sick pay: so will have to put in at the Job Centre to organise income.   And probably need to see my GP: or, at least, a duty doctor, to arrange a sick note.

AND try and persuade the station to give me my money back on the two remaining train tickets for this week.

Money is the heart of our capitalist system … 

And a worry, at the moment …

The Daily Teaser — 29-3-2016

Hmmm … 

I’ve got last night’s episode of Gotham on, in the background.

Mr Freeze is doing his horribly horrible Freeze thing to people: and in the Gotham take on the Batman mythos, has a sympathetic motivation.

Oh … and Penguin’s ended up in Arkham Asylum: having something of a Spartacus moment … 

But that’s not all that caught my eye.   During the ad break, I saw a trailer for the upcoming Warcraft movie.

Not something I think I’d be going for.

I’ve picked up the impression, over the years, that, while video and role-playing games make for great games, they don’t necessarily make for great movies.

Which I can’t help but think is a shame.

In part … ?   Because that doesn’t necessarily do the games any favours.

But also means film companies aren’t necessarily looking to books as a source for a film.

Which is possibly a bigger shame.
