Black Widow — A Review

14th August, 2021.

It’s got to be said, I’m a man with time on his hand.

You’ve possibly guessed, haven’t you?

Pointless brain Teasers don’t happen by themselves, after all.

Neither do any other videos I make!

At any rate: I’ve time to watch the odd movie.

And had a choice of three, tonight: Censor, In The Earth … or Black Widow.

I went — as you’ve possibly guessed — for Black Widow.

I’ll tell you more, when I finish this post, tomorrow night.

But I think I’ve made an ungood* choice.

Wrong Turn (2021) — A Review

8th March, 2021.

Right …

This is possibly getting to be a habit.

Watching something: then starting a post, that’s going to be finished later.

Yes: I’ve seen a movie, tonight.

Yes: I’m going to finish this post, tomorrow night.

And yes: I finally made up my mind: to watch the 2021 version of Wrong Turn.

The Old Guard — A Review.

18th July, 2020.

Right now … ?

It has to be said, right now, I seriously need some cash.

I’m right when — in the video intro for this post — I say I need to see a film.

And need a haircut.

No … I really need a haircut … !

It’s getting frustratingly lank … !

~≈†≈~

It’s not, unfortunately, something I can do anything about … yet.

At least, until I get paid.

That’s the point I’ll be joining the queue for the nearest barbers.

Just me, there’s a a few of them: queues and barbers.

But it’s not something I can do anything about, right here and now.

Saying that, I can — and have — gone for the other option in I mention in the introduction.

Yes.

I’ve seen a film.

Hmmm …

Spectral — A Review

7th March, 2020.

You know, it had to be said … I get into a funny mood, at times.

I’m out of a job: and suffered with depression, amongst other things.

And … ?

And, I’ve accidentally locked myself out of my Universal Credit account on top of everything else.

There’s possibly a long story, there.

On the up side … ?

I’ve satisfied myself that my new laptop — a second hand Thinkpad, running a version of Ubuntu MATE — can be used in the local library.

Or, at least, connected to their wi-fi.

I’ve more complaints about Catalina as a result.

Or, at least, Safari.

I’d suggest reading this afternoon’s post … if you’re curious.

~≈†≈~

At any rate … ?

I’ve been tinkering about with the new computer for a while …

But fancied catching a TV show … or possibly a movie.

I settled for a movie: the 2016 film, Spectral.

Whether I made a good decision is a whole other matter.

Terminator: Dark Fate — A Review

29th February, 2020.

It has to be said, it’s a spare Saturday evening.

No cash to go out, little to do if I did have cash …

And frankly … ?

A mood bordering on the thoughtful …

If nothing else … ?

I fancied a film.

I’ve a few sitting in my collection that needed viewing: and one or two had been suggested to me.
Teaser regular, Olga had suggested I Am Not A Serial Killer.   Which was in the collection, at some point: but is maybe for another time.

The Girl on the Third Floor was another: I’d seen it float past on a Facebook group I belong to.

Possibly not …

Candyman?   The 1992 horror film: a remake of which is due out this year … ?

Possibly: a post would get a lot of views …

But maybe not yet …

I finally … went with Terminator: Dark Fate.

Am I convinced … ?

The Banana Splits Movie — A Review

21st December, 2019.

You know, it’s Christmas.

You must have noticed, yes?

It’s the decorations, jollity, rain …

And the incredible amounts of carol singers in whatever your equivalent of Brentwood High Street is.

Depressing, isn’t it … ?

At least, depressing enough — now that I’ve finished the bulk of my Christmas cards — that I actually felt I deserved a movie.

Yes.

The Banana Splits Movie.

Yes, it’s a movie … of those Banana Splits.

Quite whether it was worth the effort … ?

Hmm …

Hellraiser: Judgement — A Review.

6th October, 2019.

It’s Sunday.

I think …

Hang on …

Yes.

It’s Sunday: and I’ve had the day off.

And, I should add, been looking after my nephew, Jude: who’s getting to that age where …

Well … talking computers talking at him is hysterical.

If you’re on a Mac, and get the the chance?

Running this bit of code in Script Editor, will show you the sort of thing I mean …

say "Hello Jude" using "Zarvox"say "My name is Zarvox" using "Zarvox"
say "Shush!" using "Zarvox"
say "I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts" using "Zarvox"
You should get the sort of thing that impresses eight year olds.

~≈¥≈~

At any rate … ?

It’s a Sunday night I’ve had off.

And time — I felt — to catch a film.

Granted: I had enough in the collection to keep me indecisive for minutes …

Do I go for cheesy?   The Creature from The Black Lagoon or Inseminoid?

Something highly literary?   The Congress, for example?

Or something a touch grim … ?

Like the Gary J. Tunicliffe directed, Hellraiser: Judgement.

In as many sense of the word as you can think of … ?

Hmmm.

Memory: The Origins of Alien — A Review

8th September, 2019.

Yes: it’s a Sunday night off.

A night off at the ned of a day where …

Where …

Well, I’ve not actually done much: bar had dinner at my family’s.

Apparently?

My nephew, Jude, wants to bring his friend Archie, over to mine.

Making videos seem to have caught someone’s attention.

I’m not sure how I feel about that, though.

Babysitting my nephew’s one thing.

Looking after someone else kid, as well … ?

Well …

That’s another matter …

~≈§≈~

At any rate … ?

At any rate?

A night off … ?

Means watching something on telly.

Or, at least, catching something on the AppleTV.

And, although I’ve plenty of choice, at the moment … ?

I felt that a documentary could be the thing.

Given this week saw the fortieth anniversary of the UK release of Alien?

I felt watching the documentary about it — Memory: The Origins of Alien — would be an idea …

Lord of Illusions: A Review

3rd September, 2019.

It has to be said, I’ve just had a look at my emails.

And … ?

I’m getting one or two offers of interview coming through.

At a time I suspect I won’t be able to claim help from the job centre: as I’m now working part time …

Oy!

At any rate … ?

And outside of any parliamentary excitement?

Today’s been a day off.

Which means it’s time for a movie.

I finally made my mind up, and went for … Lord of Illusions.

Hmmm …

Level 16 — A Review

22nd June, 2019.

It has to be said: Amazon’s a funny bugger.

No, wait, let me be fair, there.

Third party sellers on Amazon are funny buggers.

I ordered — with a little help — some new jogging bottoms.

Mine are getting a little worn.

The things were supposed to be here, by 8pm, today.

Guess what … ?

They’re a no-show.

I’m thinking Amazon third-party sellers … can be a mixed bag …

The Howling — A Review

7th May, 2019.

OK …

Have you ever felt that watching a film would be a good idea?

Or, come to that, watching a TV show?

One or the other, at least?

You know how it goes, you’ve got nothing to do of an evening, nowhere to go, you’ve had dinner, the laundry’s done, you’ve finished that book …

What ever: you have time on your hands, and are wondering what to do.

Personally, I actually fancied a movie: as I had a few I’d not seen, sitting in my movie collection.

Frankly?

After sorting out some for my 8 year old nephew, Jude — who thinks Men In Black looks entertaining*, and Boxtrolls looks weird and interesting — I fancied a movie or two …

Ones that possibly had an 18 rating.

Or maybe not … I’m actually tempted to see Boxtrolls …

At any rate … ?

I fancied something scary.

Something to make me jump.

So felt watching the 1981, Joe Dante film, The Howling could be just the thing.

Just as a question?

Was it time well spent … ?

Hmmm …

Millennium: A Review

31st December, 2018.

I’m have to admit, its New Year’s Eve.

And, as I write, 2019 is about an hour or so away.

Let’s hope it’s a good one, shall we?

From where I’m sitting, the most I can hope for … ?

Frankly, is a job.

Wish me luck on that front.

I do know my nephew, Jude, and his mum — my sister, Ruth — are due over.

After all, Dr Who’s on.

Which is something to look forward to!

Tonight, though … ?

Tonight, I’ll admit it …

I’m skint: so, even if I did drink, going to a pub would be tricky.

Assuming, of course, that the pub DOESN’T charge for entry on New /Years Eve.

So …

What to do … ?

Reach into the collection, obviously.

Tonight’s movie … ?

Millennium …

Godzilla — A Review

2nd October, 2018.

Yes: it’s another night off.

Again.

Although, unlike last night?

I’m in less of a bleak mood.

Less bleak, thankfully, but equally as bored: and wanting to catch another movie.

You guessed it.

The 2014, Gareth Edwards directed, version of Godzilla.

‘Hmmm’ … ?

Seems rather appropriate …

Patient Seven: Hmm …

28th August, 2018.

*Spoilers*

Yep: it’s officially official.

I’ve had another day off.

As I write, I’ve some music on in the background.

Japan’s famed Tin Drum album.

Which may not be for everyone, I admit.

But frankly?

I like it.

Although I’m curious to know why a band call Japan produced tracks like Cantonese Boy or Visions of China.

Totally different country.

At any rate … another day … another dollar …

And another movie.

~≈§≈~

You’ve possibly worked out I like a film or two, haven’t you … ?

Possibly, he said!

At any rate, I like a film or two.

And occasionally?

Get recommendations.

Including from an old friend, Faye.

She’s managed another on, today.

The Danny Draven directed, anthology film that is … Patient Seven.

Thelma: Am I Convinced … ?

8th April, 2018.

Yeah …

That little opener’s one for the books, isn’t it … ?

Maybe I should try and clarify, here: shouldn’t I?

My name’s Paul, if you didn’t know.

I work in a call centre inChelmsford, I blog — the Daily Teasers are getting some attention — and, occasionally?

I’ve a bad habit of telling you about TV shows I’ve watched … and movies I’ve rented/seen.

Oh, and occasionally music.

I’ve got Into Battle with the Art of Noise, by the Art of Noise, on in the background.

Which is definitely an interesting listen: especially the Diversion Zero mix of Beat Box.   Quite different to the version on Whose Afraid (of the Art Of Noise).

At ANY rate … ?

I’ll watch or listen to stuff.

THEN tell people about it.

Tonight … ?

Tonight, I’ve rented Thelma, from iTunes.

And I’m not convinced it’s a winner.

Blade Runner 2049: Great Expectations … Unconvincingly Results …

4th February, 2018.

Hmmm …

You know, I get a certain amount of evenings off.

You’ve probably worked that out, already, haven’t you?

This coming working week?

I’ve Wednesday and next Sunday off.

That’s in addition to this evening, of course.

And, to be frank?

To be frank I wanted to see a film.

One that’s only just become available: but raved about for quite some time.

I’ve seen Blade Runner 2049.

I THINK I’m getting a habit of picking movies I don’t like, just recently.

mother! didn’t grab, particularly.

As you’ve possibly worked out, I’ve seen Blade Runner 2049 …

Unconvinced is putting it mildly.

Welcome To Essex — Hmmm …

7th January, 2018.

You know, this morning, I was wondering what to do with myself, this evening.

Really.

I’ve got laundry on the go, as we speak.

At least … I’ve got a tumble dryer making tumble drying noises at me, as we speak: and trying to drown out the Jean Michel Jarre album I’ve got on in the background.

I was also wanting to catch a couple of things …

Maybe get started on some more box-sets.

I’ve quite a lot of American Horror Show serials to get through, more Mr Robot, the second series of Man in the High Castle …

There’s scads of stuff I’d like to see.

But thought to myself, “No,” I thought.

“No, I’ll catch a movie.”

I actually had one lined up.

Yes: you’re right.

I’ve just seen a review copy of a film that’s not been released: yetª.

The soon to be finished, and Ryan J. Fleming directed/written zombie Welcome to Essex.

One filmed, in part, in my home town of Brentwood.

Hmmm …

~≈§≈~

Welcome to Essex opens in Brentwood’s Job Centre: as recently discharged Army specialist, Ryley Dunn (Catherine Delaloye), finding herself out of work, and out of luck.

And, with the last of her cash?

Getting several beers down her neck.

Only to wake up, hungover, in the middle of a field.

It’s when she get’s back to town, dragged into a bin by Muzzy (Muzzy Tahir), as hordes of undead stream past their hiding place …

It’s only when she sees her local bar — Murphy’s Sports Bar* — empty that her suspicious are raised.

It’s only when — hiding in Eclipse† — she meets fellow survivors that she realises something has gone seriously wrong …

~≈§≈~

Now …

I know what you’re thinking.

You’re thinking, “Paul, was it any good?”

I’m going to you give a straightforward answer.

No.

But add qualifications: based on the very simple fact I know I’ve seen the second rough, pre-release, cut: one that reviewers like me would see, before the film  is finished.

Welcome to Essex is far from perfect: I’m thinking the sound levels‡ and synchronisation could do with a lot of work, the grain and colours don’t necessarily match up from one scene to the next.   The characters — at least initially — don’t get named until relatively late in the film: and — in the case of Sergeant Aherne (Greg Burridge) — don’t get named all, from what I could see.

There’s also the small but minor fact that the film’s ending leaves Ryley’s opening narration pretty redundant.

No, really redundant.

Unless I’m missing something.

However?

I’m also aware that Smoking Monkey Productions are due to release Welcome to Essex to DVD, at some point this month.

I’m aware that any final editing that they can transform this into a good film.

Welcome to Essex isn’t that good film: yet.

But?

There’s humour in the dialogue, the basic — if uncomplicated — plot is there, and the massed zombies^ don’t look too bad: especially given Welcome to Essex has been made on a shoestring budget.

Many years ago, I watched a film called Absentia: which made me think of the various demos John Peel used to get sent by various bands.   It was one I felt was very amateur: but showed us the potential of the people involved in its making.   I felt in made an interesting introduction to the folks involved.

Welcome to Essex, likewise, isn’t stunning.

But enough basics are there: that tell me it’s on the way.

Welcome to Essex?

Isn’t good.

But is a good demo tape.

Is a good introduction to Smoking Monkey Productions.

Welcome to Essex

*       Yes, it is a real pub, and just around the corner from me: at least, it was.   It’s now a restaurant called CKN.

†        Yep, another local pub: now closed, I believe.   It was, though, on Ongar Road: in what used to be The Castle.

‡        Basically, the dialogue seemed a touch too loud compared to any background or music: and seemed to be a fraction out of sync with the actor’s mouth movements.   I DO know I had buffering issues, watching the later parts of the film: but this seemed to affect, before the major slow down.

^        About a thousand extras were used, if I recall what I read in the Brenwood Gazette about it, back in 2013.

The Prince Of Darkness: Mmmm …

31st August, 2017

Ummm …

Possibly Hmmm …

Or even Ahhh …

Yes, you’re right …

It’s been one of those afternoons.   Or possibly days.

No, nothing drastically bad’s been happening.   Nor anything especially wonderful.

Just — basically — quiet.

Well … bar doing the inevitable laundry … and watching a movie.

John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, so you know.

And, having seen it?   The frequent words of one of my co-workers comes to mind here.

“I’m confused …”

The Ghoul: Not For Me …

You know, I don’t think that I’ve had that much time off, this week.

Or, at least, as much as I did, last week.

But … ?

But I’ve had enough: to do a little writing, a little cleaning up around the place.

Oh, and enough time to stay in, this morning, patiently waiting for an electrician to fix my hallway light.

Or, at least, replace the fitting … and, while he was at it, see to the beeping smoke detectors.

No, literally, beeping.

The batteries needed changing.

At any rate?

At any rate, I had the evening free for a movie.

Right now?

Right now, I’ve just finished watching the Ben Wheatley produced, Gary Tunley directed, The Ghoul.

And, much as I usually like anything with the name ‘Wheatley,’ on it?

I’m not convinced by The Ghoul …

Ghost in the Shell: Hmmm …

15th August, 2017

You know, I HAVE to confess to having had the night off, tonight.

You’d possibly worked that out, hadn’t you?

After all, I’ve only been complaining about the way my work hours go up and down like a yoyo, for some time.

This week?   Sees me on very short hours: but next week, sees them going back up.

Leaving me with little money, later …

But plenty of time, now.

Unoccupied time.

Time I can watch a TV show: although I’ve caught a few of them.

Or maybe go out.   Not enough cash, frankly.

Or … ?

Rent a film: something I’ve been meaning to do for a while.

I’ve a few films sitting on an extra hard drive on my MacPro, waiting to be watched.

But fancied something new.

It didn’t take long to find something I fancied see: mostly because of the whitewashing argument about the film.

Was it worth it, though … ?

Hmmm …

~≈Ê≈~
