The Prince Of Darkness: Mmmm …

31st August, 2017

Ummm …

Possibly Hmmm …

Or even Ahhh …

Yes, you’re right …

It’s been one of those afternoons.   Or possibly days.

No, nothing drastically bad’s been happening.   Nor anything especially wonderful.

Just — basically — quiet.

Well … bar doing the inevitable laundry … and watching a movie.

John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, so you know.

And, having seen it?   The frequent words of one of my co-workers comes to mind here.

“I’m confused …”

Directed and written by John Carpenter, The Prince Of Darkness show us an unnamed priest — Donald Pleasence — hiring a small team of graduate students: headed by Professor Birach — Victor Wong — to do some research into an abandoned church: in LA.

An abandoned, and run down part of LA: who’s homeless residents are menacingly pale.

The church?

Isn’t a normal church.

Oh, no …

The lead’s gone, the windows really are stained.

And then … ?

There’s the hideous green thing in the ceiling.

Now …

Confused … ?

Well … maybe confused is the wrong word to use, here.

You see, I don’t know if I’m completely in love with The Prince of Darkness.

Carpenter, himself?   Puts the film as part of a set of related films: along side The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness.

Both of which I’ve seen: both of which I prefer.

Certainly, they got a better score from me than Carpenter’s own They Live: which, as well made as I found it, wasn’t a movie I was enamoured of.

Granted, it’s not, I think, Carpenter’s best.

But, with a feel between Lovecraft and Dennis Wheatley, and an unnerving repeated dream sequence?

I think The Prince of Darkness is worth at least one watch.
