Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 20th November 2024.

20th November, 2024.

Right … if you’ve seen the intro video … ?

You’ll possibly know the M4 Mac mini I’ve bought — one with a one terabyte SSD, and sixteen gigabytes of RAM, one I’d bought with much help — had been due to get here, by this Friday.

It actually turned up, yesterday: at ten to two in the afternoon.

I have to admit, I’m looking forward to setting it, and the new keyboard and mouse, up.

Whist simultaneously being nervous about both that: and re-setting the old model.

It’s nothing unusual: and much like stage fright, which I used to get, presenting live pub quizzes.

Hopefully, though?

Things will go well*.

~≈💻≈~

One thing I do know … ?

Is that I’ve managed to clear some of the mess on my table.

By the simple method of nailing a few bits of kit to the wall next to desk.

With cheap picture hooks from a local shop.

Here’s hoping that’s a useful — and stealable — idea!

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-10-2024 — Mischief Night.

30th October, 2024: Mischief Night.

Right … It’s official: my nephew was over, yesterday.

And made another video … !

Feel free to head for YouTube, and press ‘Like’.

He’d appreciate it!

~≈🏁≈~

I’m a Mac fan: you knew that.

So … ?

Been keeping an eye on the various product announcements Apple have made over the past couple of days.

Monday’s announcement about new models of iMac was … slightly disappointing: powerful as these new models seem, the number of ports seems minimal.

And the highest end version’s lack of an M4 Pro chip seems like a wasted opportunity.

That’s more than countered, I feel: with Apple’s announcement of new models of Mac mini.

Complete with plenty of ports, boosted minimum RAM, and — in the three higher models — increased solid-state drives.

The most expensive model … ?

Comes with an M4 Pro chip … and three Thunderbolt Five ports: a step up from the Thunderbolt Four ports in the other models.

They look a lot like baby Mac Studios … and frankly?

Very worth-while: especially given the price!

About Bruce ...

27th November, 2021.

Just as a quick extra post?

I have a mild confession.

I’m like a few people I know: I get vaguely nostalgic about tech.

And I’m fond of the occasional Mac.

Including the first Mac mini I ever bought: back in 2008.

The thing was the result of earning £500, after getting a one hundred per cent score in a mystery shopper visit.

It was also the first new Mac I bought: and the thing I started writing Nik Nak's Old Peculiar on.

And the computer that ended up getting nicknamed ‘Bruce’: after the voice I chose to use.

I had a nostalgic phase, just recently: managing to get and external DVD drive, and a monitor, that I could use on him -- it!

I had half a mind to play a few old games on it.

Unfortunatley?

Bruce is going to get a decent burial: as the main drive’s gone.

The perils of nostalgia, hey?

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 2nd November, 2018.

2nd November, 2018.

Yep: Apple have finally and released an updated Mac mini.

At bloody last!   And WAY too long after my birthday for my comfort!

It’s rather good: bar the solid state drive size — 128 gigabytes on the baseline model — and an a slightly more powerful video card?

An it looks like you can rev up the RAM, yourself: although I could be wrong*.

It’s actually a better specced machine than my 2017 iMac!

I might just start saving up … !

The Daily Teaser — 24-10-2012

It’s OFFICIALLY official!

I’ve just seen Apple’s updated iMac line.

And I’m in lust … AGAIN … !

I mean … will you look at how thin the thing is … ?

They’ve done something similar with the iPad, by introducing an iPad Mini: complete with a 7·9” screen.

Let’s put it this way: I wouldn’t be saying no, if you were offering.

Let‘s get moving on, shall we?

Before I start getting too excited about the new Mac Mini* …

‹‹—››

Yesterday’s saw Debbi  putting in her answers: along with bagging 5 out of 6, ALSO managed to write about her adventures at the Austin Film Festivalª.

Let’s see how she — and you — do with today’s questions, shall we?

Here they are, along with the ‘How To’, License and video …

Q1) 24th October, 1945, saw the founding of the United Nations, in Washington DC: what does DC stand for … ?
Q2) More to the point, in which US city is the UN’s HQ … ?
Q3) Equally to the point, name any of the UN’s five principle organs …
Q4) Moving on … One year earlier, 24th October, 1944, saw the sinking of the Japanese ship, Zuikaku: during which World War 2 battle … ?
Q5) 24th October, 1983, saw serial killer, Dennis Nilsen go on trial: accursed of how many murders … ?
Q6) And finally … 24th October, 2003, saw which plane make its last commercial flight … ?
Ands here’s yesterday’s questions and answers …
Q1) 23rd October, 1992, saw the first visit of a Japanese Emperor to China: which Emperor was it … ?
A1) Emperor Akhihito.
Q2) More to the point, how many emperors preceded him … ?
A2) 124.
Q3) Moving on … 23rd October, 1956, saw thousands of protestors demand an end to Soviet control … of which European country … ?
A3) Hungary.
Q4) 23rd October, 2001, saw the introduction of the Apple iPod: what was the name of the original Windows software used with the iPod … ?
A4) MusicMatch^.
Q5) 23rd October, 1917 saw the Bolshevik Central Committee support an armed uprising: in which country … ?
A5) Revolutionary era Russia.
Q6) And finally … 23rd October, 1707, saw the first meeting of the Parliament of where: England, Scotland, the UK or Great Britain … ?
A6) Great Britain.
Enjoy those, everyone.

I’ll leave you with some Chantilly Lace, as today marks the Big Bopper’s birthday …

And with this quote from Batman’s co-creator, Bob Kane …
“Bill Finger was a contributing force on Batman right from the beginning. He wrote most of the great stories and was influential in setting the style and genre other writers would emulate ... I made Batman a superhero-vigilante when I first created him. Bill turned him into a scientific detective.”
Bob Kane, October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998
Hmmm …

Just as a final note …

You can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs …

*        What … ?   A terabyte sized, hard driveº … ?   Whoah … !

º        Actually,  it’s what Apple are calling a fusion drive, a combined hard- and solid-state-drive: I’m willing to bet it’s a really weird RAID setup.   Or an updated version of the OS X hot zone

ª        I’ll be having a read of that lot, later on, Debbi: I’m just sorry to have to inflict the REST of today’s post on you … !

^        Hmmm … Thinking about it, I could’ve phrased that one a bit better, couldn’t I , Debbi … ?

PHEW!

And I seriously MEAN that … !

PHEW … !

I almost had a moment of brief panic, there.

No, tell a lie …

I DID have a moment of brief panic, there … !

Mostly where I gave Bruce — my much loved Mac Mini — a hoovering.

Well …

A clean out, I should say.

Basically … ?

I powered him down, disconnected the monitor, the external hard drive, the external optical drive, and the keyboard, and flash memory sticks.

Then used three expired iTunes cards and a palette knife to top the cover off, so I could give the air-vents a going over.

The problems seemingly started when I’d reassembled Bruce, reconnected everything, and powered up.

There was no Dong.

No start up sound, in other words.

And once I’d got into my user account?

The little loudspeaker icon in the menu bar — the volume control, in other words — was greyed out.

The system was UTTERLY silent. And a check through Bruce’s System Profiler — the software utility on every Mac, that tells you, me and the nearest Technical Support person what your Mac is capable of — showed me the Mini had no on-board audio capabilities.

Which I knew was drivel.

»»⩶««

Thankfully … ?

I’m ALSO glad I kept the original Install discs — the OS X version of the Restore discs that come with a Windoze PC.

I can’t swear to if a Windoze based PC has this — it should, if it doesn’t — But the install discs that come with every new Mac have a set of software routines on them called “Apple Hardware Test.”

All I have to do in this sort of situation … ?

Is pop the relevant disc into the DVD drive.

Restart my Mac.

And MAKE SURE I’M HOLDING DOWN THE D KEY WHILE BRUCE IS RESTARTING.

Right at the moment … ?

I’m RATHER grateful I kept those original Leopard install discs that Bruce came with.

You see, each version of the test … ?

Is specific to the model … !

Can you do me a HUGE favour, at this point … ?

Remind me NOT to lose them … !

Mac Mini: The 2011 Upgrade … !

You know, I’ve got to confess, I’ve spare more than a few spare minutes oggling.

Technical specs, to be frank … !

Every spare minute since I found out, this morning, that Apple, bless ’em, have re-vamped the smallest desktop in their range, the Mac Mini.

My word, haven’t they just … !

Bruce, Bless ’im, my mid-2007 model, is starting to look seriously outdated … !

You see Bruce, bless him — the top of the range model, at the time of purchase — features 1Gb of RAM, a 120Gb hard drive and a DVI port to connect up to a 1920 x 1200 monitor: or a 1920 x 1080 VGA monitor with an adaptor. On top of that, he’s armed with a comparatively underpowered Nvidia GMA 950 graphics card.

But then, I never actually bought Bruce for gaming.

The upgraded versions — versions, I stress, as, unlike the iterations in between now and 2007, the Mini now comes in three base configurations — see Apple doing 2 models with a 500Gb hard-drive*.

The cheaper of the two, at £529, has a 2.3GHz dual-cored i5 processor, 2Gb of RAM, the 500Gb hard drive, and a Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor.

The next model up has the same hard-drive options, costs £699, and comes with a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3, and a AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics card.

Both are capable of seeing the RAM expanded, with access gained — for that job — through the base-plate at the bottom of models.

The server version, at £849, base price, is extremely configurable: with a choice of 4 or 8 gigabytes, and an eyeball popping array of other options.

NONE of the models feature an internal optical drive, although Apple does offer its USB external SuperDrive, originally designed for the MacBook Air.

»»·««

Now, I’ve GOT to confess … ?

I want one … !

Any of them, although the bottom of the range one — at £529 — is the affordable one that I’d probably go for, given the money.

After all, I still don’t do tons of gaming, online or otherwise, and the fact that — across the range — the new models have both ThunderBolt outputs — to go with Apple’s own Cinema Display — and HDMI ports, that would allow me to connect it to a suitably equipped TV would allow me to watch lots of the video stored on my external drive.

And the one surprising change, the removal of the interior optical drive … ?

Frankly … ?

Frankly, that isn’t really an issue, from where I’m sitting: especially coming from the company that was the first to make a machine — the old Bondi Blue G3 iMac, back in 1998 — without a floppy drive.

After all, we’re now living in an age where downloading software, music and films from the internet — whether through an App Store, iTunes or from third party sites — is becoming more common.

Let’s face it, I can’t remember the last time I watched a commercial DVD: my DVD recorder comes with a USB port that lets me watch any given TV show or film, so long as said film is encoded in .avi format.

What’s more … ? I’m ALSO very aware that the the SuperDrive’s on Bruce is … let’s just say temperamental, shall we? It’s something I know others have complained about, too.

Either way — and I know I’d want an external DVD burner — I’m thinking the Mini, as it stands … ?

Is still a must have … !

* Upgradable to 750 Gigabytes.

º Thunderbolt port (up to 10 Gbps), FireWire 800 port (up to 800 Mbps), Four USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps), HDMI port SDXC card slot, Gigabit Ethernet port and Audio in/out. On top of that, there’s the Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wireless options.

Weird …

Strange …

Do you remember me telling you — in this morning’s Teaser — that I was having trouble using both Safari to access the web … ?

Well, I was.

And having a heck of a problem launching iTunes, iPhoto and a few other applications, as well.

I’m still not sure exactly what happened, there, even after posting to the relevant Apple forum.

However, I’m writing this post — right now — with Safari.

On the Mac Mini. (Which, as Movie Night Adrian, Kevin D, Sarah D, Squeaky and Andrea will tell you, is called Bruce.)

After I’d spent most of the day transferring my files to an exterior hard drive, setting up a new user account, and then re-importing files, photos, music, et al into the new account.

Yoicks!!

That seems to have got around the problem.

Although it still leaves me wondering what the hell happened in the first place.

If you’ve any ideas, let me know.

Following on from the Disc Problem post …

Well …

This is going to be quick …

Remember me saying about how I was having trouble with the optical drives attached to the Mini?

Well, I had a … minor … very minor … result.

I’d been mooching around the various Apple Forums, and — so far — the only resolution I’ve seen on there is to clean the interior drive.

Which is a job and a half, as you might be able to imagine.

But there were a couple of points that caught my eye.

Using a lens cleaner: which isn’t perfect.

And (for the external burner), unplugging it between uses.

Now I’ve tried using the DVD lens cleaner option on the internal drive.

Which didn’t seem to help.

But I do know that, having used a DVD lens cleaner on the (pictured) exterior drive, and making sure it’s disconnected between uses does seem to have helped.

Or, at least, it helped on the attempt I made, burn a copy of Dalek Invasion Earth:2150AD, that I’d backed up years ago.

Which was an overnight job: but one that worked.

So it means I’m be happy.

For now.

But eyeballing a lot of — for the moment — rather pricey kit.

Now, THAT’S what I want for Christmas!!!!

I’ve FINALLY worked out what I want for Christmas; it’s just a shame nobody who’s likely to buy me stuff can afford it!

Apple have announced the new model’s of Mac’s, today, and guess what …

They’ve SERIOUSLY upped the Mini, by doing a Server version!

Now, I’ll be serious, here, I really wouldn’t know what to do with a server, if I had one.

Well …

There’s probably a few ideas, given ten minutes, a pencil, and a quick natter with Movie Night Adrian, who genuinely knows his stuff when it comes to the ’net.

But here’s my point; off bat, I’d not have a use for a Mac Mini with 5 USB ports, a Firewire 800 port, capable of dealing with two monitors, and two — TWO — 500 gigabyte hard drives.

That’s one whole Terabyte*!

Honestly, I wouldn’t.

But that doesn’t mean I don’t WANT one!

Oh, Boy!

* Right, now I know Tim, and a few other friends of mine, wouldn’t have the first idea, there; but just to give you a rough — very rough — idea, one kilobyte is 1024 characters. 1024 of them makes up a megabyte, which is about minute’s worth of music. 1024 megabytes make up a gigabyte; most commercial DVD’s are between four and seven gigabytes in size, depending on what’s on them. The hard drive on my 2007 model Mini is 120 gigabytes, so you know. The newer models are bigger!! And I want one!

Friday, 21 August 2009

Hmmm … Well … THAT worked!

Something I’m surprised about — but possibly shouldn’t be — is how relatively easy it was to transfer songs from the Mini — with a copy of iTunes 8.2.1 — to the vintage iMac, running a version of iTunes 2.x.x.

Quite a difference, I’m sure you’ll agree.

It’s something I wasn’t too sure would work; and I’m not sure would work, trying to get the same songs from the Mini to the Performa; which, of course, is both three years older than the iMac, and has no version of iTunes, what so ever.

Hmmm … I wonder …

Possibly something to try. In the morning …

Definitely in the morning!

But — and however functionally different the two versions are — it’s nice to know I’ve a functioning media centre … ok … Stereo … in my bedroom.

Does that sound a touch sleazy?

Allison?

Anyone?

But I do know I think I prefer the look of iTunes 2.x.

The first version of OS X I got hold of was a version of Tiger, which came with iTunes 6.x.

And a heck of a lot of brushed metal windows!

And, as cool as the current version is, I kinda miss the styling in both OS 9 and Tiger

Cie la Vie …

But at least I know I can copy songs from OS X 10.5.x to Mac OS 9.2.2, and be reassured of them playing.

•••••

That’s a thing, do you remember me mentioning a friend of mine, called Kelly?

Bit of a singer, our Kelly.

(And not a bad one, either. Vix, who did the artwork for the Quizzes, sang, as well, and quite well, too; but where Vix had the kind of voice you settle down and marry, Kelly, bless her, has the sort of voice that’s upside down, on a pole, somewhere. Or dancing on a table … Why do I get the feeling I’m being looked at … ?)

At any rate, Kelly’s been known to get on stage at various open mic nights, and let rip; and, as part of that, asked me if I could throw together some ideas, for songs she could do. Telling me, while she did so, that she wasn’t too worried about whether the material concerned had been written for men, or women. She’d play it by ear, and wangle something … !

So this is the list I put together for her; whether it’s of any use, I don’t know, but its enough of an mix, I think, to get someone’s attention … possibly …

Ghosts Japan
History Repeating Shirley Bassey
Absolute Beginners (Single Version) David Bowie
Cry Me A River Julie London
That Ole Devil Called Love Alison Moyet
I Put a Spell On You Nina Simone
Will You? Hazel O’Connor
In These Shoes? Kirsty MacColl
Don't Leave Me This Way The Communards
Drop Dead Gorgeous Republica
I Don’t Want A Lover Texas
Cowboys & Kisses Anastasia
Return to the Valley of Out Come the Freaks Was (Not Was)
How the Heart Behaves Was (Not Was)

Hmmm …

Oddball?

Possibly.

But hopefully ear-catching; and I’m thinking that the two Was (Not Was) tunes, at the end will probably match that voice of her’s, given that they’re both numbers usually sung not by the Was’ regular singer — behatted ultra dude, Sweet Pea Atkinson — but by Was (Not Was)’s more Curtis Mayfieldesque other lead singer, Harry Bowens.

MUCH more the thing, I think!
