11th April, 2026: the Apple 1.

Right, then: it’s officially official.

I’ve seen another episode of The Daleks’ Master Plan.

And I’m greatly saddened: that so many episodes of the thing are missing.

As wonderful as the remaining episodes are … ?

I’m very aware there’s huge gaps.

And dearly wishing Aunty would release the thing as an animated bluray!

I’d buy one!

In other news … ?

The Artemis 2 mission has safely returned to Earth: with a crew that’s described as “happy and healthy”.

Good for them!

At this stage, the only minor concern is, I’m told, the heat sheilds: although they seemed to have worked, and worked well.

But … ?

I can still remember the Colombia Disaster, the accident that saw a space shuttle burn up on re-entry, because of a defective heat shield.

I can only hope NASA’s keeping an eye on those …

I’ve woken up thinking today is Saturday.

Why?

I have no idea … !

I’ve finished another review: of episode three of The Savages.

As a final thought … ?

I’ve been using DaVinci Resolve — the free version, available though the App Store — to edit some of the videos, here.

I have to say, it’s not a bad app.

But … ?

It’s only now I’ve used it for a while, I realise quite how much iMovie does for a user.

It removes the green fringing I get when compositing video, automatically: something I have to do manually in DaVinci, for example.

Comparing the two, DaVinci can layer far more elements together than iMovie can.

But?

DaVinci tends to crash when using multiple, intensive, effects.

And tends to lose clips on external drives when it does so.

Can I recommend it others?

Yes: it’s powerful.

But yes … it’s got quirks.

Enough quirks, on the computer I use, to say that, given the money?

I’d be buying Final Cut Pro, rather than the premium version of DaVinci.

It strikes me Apple’s own pro software would be the far more stable of the two.

Right … 

It’s officially Tuesday: and … ?

I’ve phoned the court service: to see what’s happened with my appeal.

The court service has emailed over the decision: which has gone in my favour.

I now have an official Limited Capacity for Work: and — hopefully — am due extra help.

Although — apparently — things have to be signed off by the relevant Secretary of State.

I think — now the bank holiday is over — that phoning the DWP may be a good idea.

We’ll have to see what happens.

I’ve finished watching the third season of For All Mankind: I saw the final episode on Sunday, and finished my review, last night.

Right … I mentioned it, yesterday: I am having possibly rent issues.

As my landlords are putting the rent up.

But told the Department of Work and Pensions, who pay my benefits, they’re not.

When money’s this tight … ?

That’s not what you want to hear.

What it DOES mean … ?

Is phoning them — and the Job Centre — to try and get this corrected.

Once Were Warriors — A Review.

I’m officially going to bed, in a while.

But … ?   Needed to make sure I’ve got my initial thoughts on paper.

Or screen, at least.

Or — ha! — website.

Just in case you didn’t know?   I’ve been blogging a while.

And I treat Nik Nak’s Old Peculiar — the blog you’re reading now — as a mix of online diary, and way of entertaining people: as I’m sure my regulars will tell you.

I also occasionally write about TV shows I’ve watched, and movies I’ve seen

Right now, I’m writing this on Saturday, 10th April: after having made my mind up, about what film to watch.

You’ve possibly guessed already.

I’ve sat down with the 1994, Lee Tamahori directed, film, Once Were Warriors: after seeing one of it’s stars in season two of The Mandalorian.

It’s got to said, I’m grateful I had just enough money, yesterday, for a cab.

Frankly?   I’d done into town, earlier in the day, and picked up some shopping: and, when I got back home … ?

Realised I’d forgotten to pick up my diabetes medication.

I’m grateful I had enough cash for a cab: as I had an Amazon delivery that afternoon.

Doubly grateful.

Going up Warley Hill in a hurry is not exactly my idea of fun*!

It’s Sunday morning: and, of course, I’ve got Radio Four on.

I wouldn’t call myself especially religious: but the more Anglican Sunday services can be quite soothing, first thing in the morning.

I have heard the news, though.

You’ll possibly know about the riots in various parts of Belfast.

Teenagers, mostly, encouraged by loyalists paramilitaries angry at a Brexit deal that leaves the region using trade rules that leave it with a better connection to the republic, than the UK.

According to today’s news?

It seems special forces troops are being sent in to the area, undercover, to help both police and MI5.

Given the very little I know of Northern Irish history?

I’ve a distinct feeling that’s a bad idea …

It’s had to be said, I have a movie collection.

A set of films, sitting on an external drive connected to my iMac.

And have access to a lot of streamed movies, as well.

From various sources.

Occasionally?

I like to actually watch a film: which is what I’ve done, today.

Tonight, I should say.

Granted?   When fiddling about, I couldn’t — initially — make my mind up, about what to watch.

Having something of a range of options.

Eventually, though?

I ended up watching the 2019, Nicolas Cage film that is Color Out Of Space.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 11-4-2020: International Louie Louie Day

11th April, 2020.

In between writing Teasers?

I do stuff.

I make videos, do laundry, watch TV and movies … 

And like a book at bedtime.

Currently?

I’m reading The Kalevala, the Finnish national epic: in an English translation by Keith Bosley.

It’s gorgeous reading: and possibly one of the few I’m tempted to read around to myself.

Just so I have a handle on the rhythms of the thing!

It’s a gorgeous read: one whose best cantos tell the story of the doomed Kullervo.

I’ve just finished that section.

And?

I don’t think I’ve read anything like it.

I’ve possibly said this before, but I’ll reiterate it now.

The Kalevala is worth your time.

“Do not, folk of the future, bring up a child crookedly,

11th April, 2019.

Yep: we’re now going to leaving the EU … 

On 31st October, at the latest.

Right now … ?

Right … I voted Remain.

I’m no educated Joe: one that could explain the economic benefits of staying.

My own reasons were personal.

I still think it’s a good idea … 

However?

The amount of wrangling in Parliament, the indecisive amounts of foot-dragging, the fact we’ve still not left, despite one deadlines going past and another on the way means I’m as frustrated as any other UK citizen.

I can’t help but think we’ve been had over, by MPs: regardless of which way we may have voted.

Parliamentary politicians, as a group?

Are a disgrace.

Oh, the interview … 

I have to admit, the interview finished after a few minutes.

As one of the first things I asked was about help with transport: the job’s further away than my last one.

The interviewer’s going to be emailing me, later today.

We’re going to carry on: once we know what’s happening.

Which doesn’t sound a bit like Brexit, now I look at it …

11th April 2018.

Good … *Yawn* morning, everyone.

Although, saying that?

I actually feel as if I’ve had enough sleep.

Despite being ill, last night: and having the day off.

The guts were playing up, again.

Which means a loss of income, obviously: NOT something I like.

But there we go.

Hopefully?

Hopefully, I’ll be sorted with some sort of permanent position: although, right now?

I’m sceptical about it happening.

The only upside?

The only upside to the day off, yesterday, is simply this.

I managed to catch an entertaining film, last night.

I think I need to pay Brentwood Council a visit, today.

And putting it off isn’t necessarily going to help.

Remember, a couple of days ago, I mentioned that Council hadn’t sent me a payment card for my council tax?

It’s still not here.

I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking going in to the Town Hall to ask what’s going on would be useful …

Candyman: A Review

15th April, 2011

I’ve GOT to admit, I was going to tell you that Kevin D, Movie Night Adrian, and I, saw the James Bond film, Quantum Of Solace, on Tuesday.

I meant to … !

But as Adrian and I caught it, not long after it was originally released on DVD … ?

I wasn’t too worried: after all, I stand by what I said, back then: but do know both Adrian and Kevin were/are very impressed by Daniel Craig’s version of the title character.

At any rate, Quantum of Solace wasn’t what Adrian and I managed to catch, tonight …

As you can probably tell from the poster …

The film was the 1992, Clive Barker scripted, Candyman.

Derived from Barker’s own short story, The Forbidden, Candyman sees Virginia Madsen — who Adrian and I had last seen in The Haunting In Connecticut — as Helen Lyle, an unhappily married graduate student, working, along with a friend, on a doctoral thesis on urban myths and legends.

And, on being told by one of the university’s cleaners, that one particular urban legend — the Candyman of the title — seems to have its origins in the run-down housing projects* of Cabrini Green.

With the story of the son of a slave who was a talented painter who’d fallen in love with a young white woman he’d been commissioned to paint.   Who’d been punished by having his right hand, his painting hand, hacksawed off, and then being stung to death by bees.

On being told this, Helen has to investigate.
