30th December, 2025: Name That Sportsman!

I think I can safely say I have two copies of The Lord of the Rings: Ralph Bakshi’s animated, 1978, version.

And I’m going to have to send back the DVD copy I got.

Amazon has both a DVD and a blu-ray version: and, given how their search results, go, sometimes?

I didn’t see the bluray version … until after I’d bought the DVD!

Something’s getting set back …

A few minutes ago, I took a couple of photos: outside the front of my building.

I don’t know that the camera on my phone catches the colours, but the sky … ?

Was gorgeous: with clouds turned glorious shades of red and pink, in the light of the sunrise.

OK: I grant you the old ‘Red Sky at Night’ saw reminds us the weather’s going to be (possibly) bad for the rest of the day.

But … ?

For the few moments it took me to take the photos, it was beautiful.

You’ll possibly remember that former Old Peculiar regular, Trevor Veail, died recently.

I’ve been contacted by Gill, his sister: who tells me his cremation is tomorrow — 31st December, 2025 — at 8·30.

As it’s what’s called a simple funeral, she’s encouraging us to send thoughts, then … 

I’ll be pausing, I know that: as it will be a sad day.

Nik Nak’s Daily Teaser — 30-12-2024 — The Ginza Line

30th December, 2024: The Ginza Line.

It’s officially Monday: so I’m up early!

But not necessarily for the reason you think.

Normally?

I’d be getting ready to head for my usual weight management meeting.

Today?

I’m getting ready to head for a set of quarterly diabetic blood tests.

Hopefully?

I’ve had enough water for the phlebotomist to do their job!

I’ve been known to buy a book, occasionally.

I’ve a couple of comic books, collected editions of the old 2000AD strip, MACH 1, on order*, for example.

But … ?

I’ve also got a copy of Fowler’s Dictionary of Modern English Usage: which turned up, yesterday.

It’s pretty much what it say on the tin, a guide to how to use different British English words, and something I’ll find handy.

I was expecting something around the size of my copies of Harts.

What I got was a breeze block!

Just as a final thought?

Today’s earworm is “Go!”, by PBS.

And … I’ve given Leela, the First and Third Doctors through the Image Playground.

30th December, 2023.

It hs to be said: stuff is occurring.

Inevitably!

For starters?

I’ve used a new — cheap! — lavaliar mic to record today’s introductory video.

Could you give it a watch, please?   And let me know what you think?

I’m not convinced it’s very loud … !

Moving on … ?

I’ve got various files uploading to my iCloud storage space.

It’s worth it, I think: even if it will take time.

And?

I’ve got other bits of software working with my new machine.

Including MakeMKV: which comes in handy, if you need to back-up blu-rays and DVDs.

Oh, and HandBrake.

Which is something of an old friend, and seems speedy: at least, on this version of macOS.

Quite what’ll happen in later versions, I don’t know.

I’ve also got a lot more space on my main hard drive: a result, I suspect, of this machine dropping some software in some formats, in favour of others.

That’s, hopefully, usable.

I’ve also managed to change the highlight colours the thing uses.

Partly?   Partly because the purple I’m now using seems to show up better on the monitor I’m using.

But also … because I was getting bored of green,

This year’s New Year’s Honours list has been published.

Amongst others?

Micheal Eavis — founder of the Glastonbury Festival — has received a knighthood.

Well done him: there’s only so many people who’ve pulled off cultural phenomena.

Amongst the others?

Is actress, Emilia Clarke: best known for TV series, Game Of Thrones.

Did you also know she’s in The Amazon Maurice?

It gives me an excuse to wave my review of it at you … !

30th December, 2022: Part of the Union.

Argh!

It’s Friday.

And … ?

You can tell I’m having a bad morning.

I’ve woken up … and found that the battery on my boiler — the wall mounted thing in the hall way — is on the go.

I’ve spent lord knows how long, this morning: on the phone to Robert Heath, the gas contractors, to get help.

They’re going to try and get someone to phone me — or email — to talk me through replacing them.

Here’s hoping.

I’ve read the opening story in Iron Legion — it’s called Iron Legion and brings back memories — and am looking forward to reading the rest.

I’ve ALSO got the second season of Classic Dr Who: as a bluray box set.

I’ve seen most of the episodes: bar The Crusade.

Which could well be one of the next things to review.

We’ll see.

It’s officially official: I’m getting my feet checked, this afternoon.

I’m diabetic, so you know: which means the NHS will be checking my circulation, every year.

This afternoon’s … ?   Is a couple of months early: and will hopefully clear up a mild concern I have.

I think I can say I’m … if not worried … then certainly mildly concerned.

My home town of Brentwood is in Essex: which is now in Tier 4, the highest of Covid 19 restrictions.

For starters?

NHS providers in Essex, and the County Council, have declared that the county in having a Major Incident.

Quite what the implications of that are, I don’t know.

But I can’t imagine them being good.

Brexit … … 

I can’t help but think Brexit is a … bad thing: and not goo for the UK.

I honestly believe it’s bad for the UK.

The agreement that’s due to be voted on, today, that governs the UK’s relationship with the EU?   Specifically mentions ‘modern e-mail software packages,’: including Mozilla Mail and Netscape Communicator 4.x.

As far as I can see, there’s never been a Mozilla Mail: it’s always been called Thunderbird.

And the last stable release was in 2002.

It’s been retired for many years.

If the UK’s negotiators got that wrong … ?

What else have they messed up?

I’ve managed to catch Wonder Woman 1984.

Point A)?

It’s rather good.

Point B)?

Wonder Woman 3 has been green lit!

I’m looking forward to that!

Especially if Wonder Woman crops up.

Yes: it’s a Monday morning.

Yes: I’m back to work.

At least, I would be … if I’d managed to find a job.

At any rate, I’m feeling … 

Mostly chipper.

Mostly.

The stomach’s playing up, again, so I’d need to check that with my GP about that.

And the fact we’re in to the post Christmas working week?   And I can therefore do stuff?

Well, that’s something.

Remember, yesterday, I told you about a disc I needed to return?

I’ve done that: and not got my cash back.

As my local CeX argued it wasn’t faulty: the reason the second disc wouldn’t work was it was a ultra hi-definition disc, and needed a UHD disc, in order to play.

Hmmm … 

I’m not happy about that.

But did get a credit note … and the Dark Knight box set.

Now all I have to do?

Is return the copy of Dr Mabuse I’ve picked up.

I’m blowed if I can get the subtitles to work!

How’s your email inbox … ?

I don’t know about you?

But, given the situation?   Mine’ seeing a lot of action.

Not that that’s a bad thing.

But, lord, the amount of wading I have to do, to get to stuff that’s relevant.

And that’s before I get to checking my Junk mail, to see what’s ended up, there …

I’m happily glad I’m not a newspaper.

Or, at least?

I’m happily glad I’m not a newspaper … in the US.

It sounds like several have been hit by a major piece of hackery: that’s causing all sorts of problems.

By the sounds of the BBC report?

It’s an attack that’s not designed to steal data: but to disrupt services.

I’m guessing that it’s a national government — Russia or China spring to mind — that’s doing it.

But I’m wondering if — like the Gatwick Drone Incident — we’ll ever find out who’s responsible.

I’m also thinking something else.

Someone’s learnt the most important lesson from the US sponsored Stuxnet attack.

Targeting infrastructure’s a good thing …

Hmmm … 

OK … 

This year’s New Year’s Honours list has been published.   And seeing various people — from actors to former politicians to research scientists — getting various shades of gong.

All good: the fact a lot of people who do volunteer work with various local charities, and a lot of otherwise obscure research scientists.

There’s a lot of public servants — like nurses and teachers — getting various shades of gong.

It’s not just celebrities, politicians and civil servants who’ve impressed their political bosses.

However … 

I think we can say it’s short of a certain something.

I, personally, might have missed it … 

But I couldn’t see anyone who’d been nominated for services to blogging on the complete list.

You know, I actually managed to catch a film, last night.

Frankly, I’m happy about that.

I’ve not managed to catch one for some time.

I did last night: I watched Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon.
