Did you ever meet a writer called Storm Constantine?

Or read anything by her?

I did the latter, many years ago: The Monstrous Regiment, and her Grigori trilogy.

And really should get to grips with her Wraeththu novels: which kickstarted her career.

I met her a couple of times, as well: back in the late Nineties.

You couldn’t wish to met a warmer woman: nor one with a more bewitching smile, or wickeder sense of humour.

I actually interviewed her, and kept meaning to post the results here.

I never did: for various reasons.

And possibly now never will: in a chat on Facebook, many years later, she told me she wanted to see and approve the finished results, before I published.

Understandably, I think: utter professional that she was, she didn’t want a complete amateur making a pigs ear of things!

Sadly?   I’ll not get that approval.

As Storm died of cancer on Thursday, 14th January, 2021.

She’ll be much missed: by her friends, her family … and her husband, Jim.

All I can do?   Is send him my condolences.

Officially job hunting … 

You couldn’t possibly tell, could you … ?

Especially as I told you in this morning’s Daily Teaser.

Either way, I’m job hunting: and the full implications are sinking in.

I’m doing to be doing nothing productive, bar looking for work for however long that takes.

And have good old fashioned money worries.

After all, my next benefit payment will be in a few days time: but is a reduced Universal Credit payment, based on the hours I had been doing.

It’s only the month afterwards — the day before Christmas Eve — that I get whatever the first full payment is.

Something tells me I have financial problems.

I am officially a body with nothing to do, today.

Beyond wondering around like a forlorn leaf, blown mournfully in the autumnal breezes that can afflict a man’s soul at this time of year.

Come the evening?   I could sit around, sounding pretentious.

Or, of course, catch a movie … 

I caught a movie: one that’s been sitting in the collection for a while.

Yes, you’ve guessed it, haven’t you … ?

It’s been one of those afternoons.   Or possibly days.

No, nothing drastically bad’s been happening.   Nor anything especially wonderful.

Just — basically — quiet.

Well … bar doing the inevitable laundry … and watching a movie.

John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness, so you know.

And, having seen it?   The frequent words of one of my co-workers comes to mind here.

“I’m confused …”

I do like a good film, now and again.

And … ?   When I can find the chance to watch one?

I’ll quite happily sit in, and watch one.

Something I’ve done, tonight.

Believe it or not, I’ve actually had the chance, tonight.

To sit in with John Carpenter’s They Live: something that had been sitting in my personal collection for some time.

And something that’s seen as a cult classic.

Going on what I’ve seen?

I don’t think it’s a cult I’d be joining.

That’s … frustrating … 

I’ve been watching a movie, tonight: and patient letting my computer back up to an internal hard drive.

Which — for some reason — is now, suddenly full!

Oh, at least, not backing up, as Time Machine suddenly need more space than it used to, under Snow Leopard.

Money being what it is … ?

I can’t actually afford the £60 to buy a new internal drive of the size my machines telling me it needs.

It’s FRUSTRATING!

Especially when you consider I HAD the money … 

And had to spend it on the extra drive — and the associated carrier — in the first place … !

Effectively, if you’ve got £60 you can spare … ?   I’d LOVE to hear from you … !

That’s if moving my iPhoto library doesn’t work*!

John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982): Still Looking Good!

You know, I like a movie, occasionally.

You’d worked that out, hadn’t you, over the years: and probably noticed that I like watching films, and then telling you about what I’ve seen.

It’s also got to be said that, when I DO watch a film, I tend not to repeat myself.

Rarely, any way.

I have to confess, I did, tonight.

I’ve fancy catching a film for a couple of days: something gruesome, considering it’s almost Halloween.

But … ?

Well, I’ve had a look at my broadband usage for the month: it’s … OVER my limit.

Not by much, I should add: but certainly enough that any credit I’d had on my last quarterly bill has been eaten!

Which is what happens when you help your family update assorted devices, stream a lot of media from an Apple server — instead of locally! — and let a friend’s daughter watch a LOT of Stampy Cat videos … !

At ANY rate … !

At any rate, I fancied a movie.

And, lord … I’m glad I’d a backed up collection on my external drive.

It means I could watch a film, without going more over my limit than I have.

Interesting … movie of the evening … !

I’ve GOT to admit, I’ve just spent the night in.

A night in by meself, to be frank, and one that feature’s — frankly — not much on telly that was catching my attention.

Frankly … ?

Frankly, it’s times like this I’m really glad I’ve a pile of unwatched movies sitting around, I really do.

One of those unwatched movies … ?

Believe it of not, was the 1981 John Carpenter directed, Kurt Russell film, Escape From New York.

And when I say unwatched … ?

That’s exactly what I mean, to be frank. Would you believe that’s actually the first time I’ve seen it … ?
